An AI can analyse a chest X-ray for signs of tuberculosis or screen for diabetic retinopathy with incredible speed and accuracy. It can sift through millions of data points to spot patterns a human eye might miss. This makes it a phenomenal diagnostic
assistant. However, the final interpretation and the declaration of a diagnosis is a burden of responsibility an algorithm cannot bear. Official ethical guidelines for AI in Indian healthcare stress the need for accountability and mandatory human oversight. A machine can present probabilities, but it cannot sit with the weight of its decision or be held legally and morally responsible for the outcome. Patients who feel heard and understood by an empathetic doctor are more likely to disclose crucial information for a correct diagnosis and adhere to treatment plans. An AI cannot comfort a scared family, deliver difficult news with compassion, or build the deep-seated trust that is the bedrock of the doctor-patient relationship.

Medicine is rarely a simple input-output calculation. It is filled with grey areas that demand complex ethical reasoning.
