Beyond Crunches: What Is Core Control?
When we think of 'core work', images of endless crunches and planks often come to mind. But true core function is less about building a six-pack and more about 'core control'. Core control is your body's ability to maintain a stable, neutral spine while
your limbs are in motion. It's about resisting unwanted twisting, arching, or tilting of the pelvis and lower back. This skill is crucial not just for athletic performance, but for everyday activities like carrying groceries, lifting a child, or simply getting out of bed without pain. Unlike core strength, which is the ability to produce force (like in a sit-up), core control is about preventing motion. It’s the subtle, behind-the-scenes work of your deep abdominal muscles, like the transverse abdominis, that acts like a natural corset to protect your spine.
The Foundation: Your Consistent Starting Position
To accurately compare your core control over time, you need a reliable baseline. The perfect starting point is a simple, supine (lying on your back) position. Lie on a mat with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor, about hip-width apart. Your arms can rest by your sides. The goal is to find a 'neutral spine'. This doesn't mean forcing your lower back flat against the floor. Instead, allow for the natural, slight curve in your lumbar spine. You should be able to just barely slide your fingertips into the space between your lower back and the floor. Before beginning any test, gently engage your core by drawing your belly button towards your spine, as if zipping up a tight pair of trousers. This establishes the stable, controlled foundation from which you will test your movement.
Test 1: Bent-Knee Fall Out
From your neutral starting position, this subtle move is a powerful test of pelvic stability. While keeping your core engaged and your left foot planted, slowly let your right knee 'fall out' to the side. The movement should be small and controlled. The real challenge is to prevent your pelvis from rocking or tilting to the right as the leg moves. Your left leg and hip should remain perfectly still. Place your hands on your hip bones to feel for any unwanted movement. Inhale as you bring the knee back to the starting position with control. If you feel your pelvis move or your non-moving leg wobble, it’s a sign that your deep core stabilizers need more work. Repeat on the other side, noting any difference in control.
Test 2: Heel Slide
The heel slide challenges your core to resist extension, or arching, in the lower back. Begin in the same starting position, with your core braced. Keeping your heel in light contact with the floor, slowly slide one leg away from you until it is straight. The key is to maintain a completely still pelvis and a neutral spine throughout the entire movement. A common mistake is allowing the lower back to arch off the floor as the leg extends. This indicates that the hip flexors are overpowering a weak core. Move slowly and breathe, exhaling as you slide the leg out and inhaling as you return it to the bent-knee position. If you can't fully extend the leg without your back arching, simply reduce the range of motion to a point where you can maintain control.
Test 3: The Dead Bug
The Dead Bug is a classic exercise for assessing and building core stability and coordination. From your supine position, lift your legs into a 'tabletop' position, with your hips and knees bent at 90-degree angles. Extend your arms straight up towards the ceiling. Press your lower back gently towards the floor to ensure it stays connected. On an exhale, slowly lower your right arm and your left leg towards the floor simultaneously. Go only as low as you can without your lower back arching away from the mat. On an inhale, return to the starting position with control, and then repeat on the other side. Wobbling, shaking, or an arching back are all signs that you've reached the limit of your current core control.
