Many travellers miss this window, and during festival periods, general quota tickets on popular routes can vanish within minutes of the booking opening. Set a calendar reminder a day before and on the morning of the booking to ensure you don't miss out.
Master the Art of Tatkal
If you miss the 60-day window, the Tatkal and Premium Tatkal quotas are your next best bet for last-minute travel. Tatkal booking opens one day before the train's departure date. The window for AC classes opens at 10:00 AM, while the non-AC sleeper class window opens at 11:00 AM. Success in Tatkal booking is a game of speed. To increase your chances, use the 'Master List' feature on the IRCTC website to save passenger details in advance. This avoids wasting precious seconds typing names and ages. Also, ensure you have a fast payment method ready, like UPI or the IRCTC eWallet, as these are much quicker than credit cards or net banking, which can be prone to delays.
Understand Premium Tatkal
Premium Tatkal (PT) is another last-minute option that opens at the same time as the regular Tatkal quota. The key difference is its dynamic pricing model. Much like airline tickets, the fare for Premium Tatkal seats increases as demand rises and more tickets are booked. While this makes it more expensive, it also means that seats might be available for longer than in the standard Tatkal quota. It’s a good option if your travel is urgent and you are willing to pay a higher price for a confirmed seat. Unlike regular tickets, Premium Tatkal does not have a waitlist; you either get a confirmed ticket or the booking fails. Be aware that confirmed Premium Tatkal tickets have a zero-refund policy upon cancellation.
Opt for the VIKALP Scheme
Often overlooked, the VIKALP scheme, or Alternate Train Accommodation Scheme (ATAS), is a useful feature for waitlisted passengers. While booking, you can opt into this scheme. If your original ticket remains on the waiting list after the chart is prepared, Indian Railways will automatically consider you for a confirmed berth in any other train heading on the same route. There are no extra charges for this service. While it doesn't guarantee a confirmed ticket, it significantly increases your chances by widening the pool of available seats across multiple trains. The allotted train could depart up to 12 hours from your original train's scheduled time, so some flexibility is required.
Be Flexible with Your Plans
If direct trains from your city are full, consider creative alternatives. Look for trains from nearby, less-popular stations. You might find more availability if you are willing to travel a short distance by road to a different boarding point. Another strategy is the 'break journey' method. Book a ticket to an intermediate station where seats are available, and then book a separate ticket on another train from that station to your final destination. Apps like ConfirmTkt have features that suggest such alternative routes automatically. Trying different travel classes can also work; the 2AC or 3AC might have better availability than the highly sought-after sleeper class.
Keep an Eye on Special Trains
To handle the massive surge in passenger traffic during festivals like Diwali, Chhath Puja, and Holi, Indian Railways often announces special trains. These trains are not on the regular schedule and are added specifically for the festival period. Keep a close watch on the IRCTC website, official social media handles of the railway zones, and news updates for announcements about these special services. These trains often have a shorter advance booking period, sometimes as little as 10-15 days, providing another opportunity to secure a confirmed ticket when all other options seem exhausted.
