The road trip to Chikmagalur, Karnataka's coffee heartland, is already scenic, but becomes truly unforgettable when you venture slightly off the beaten path. The region is dotted with spectacular waterfalls, many of which become powerful torrents during
and after the monsoon season. While some require a bit of a trek or a jeep ride, the reward is always a breathtaking view and a refreshing escape from the confines of your car.
Jhari Waterfalls: The Buttermilk Beauty
Often called Buttermilk Falls, Jhari is one of the most popular cascades in the Chikmagalur district. Located within dense forests and coffee plantations, the falls are a serene sight. To reach them, you'll need to leave your car at a designated parking area. From there, the final stretch must be covered either by a thrilling local jeep ride or a trek through the estate. The water collects in a pool at the base, perfect for a cool dip after your adventurous journey. There is no official entry fee, but the mandatory jeep ride is a paid service. The best time to visit is from August to January, when the water flow is robust post-monsoon.
Hebbe Falls: A Two-Tiered Marvel
Located deep within the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary near the hill station of Kemmangundi, Hebbe Falls is a majestic two-stage cascade dropping from a height of about 551 feet. The journey itself is an adventure. Private vehicles are not permitted on the final stretch of rugged terrain; instead, you must hire a government-approved 4x4 jeep from a checkpoint near Kemmangundi. This bumpy ride through the forest is part of the charm, leading you to a point from where a short trek is required to reach the falls. The waterfall is split into Dodda Hebbe (Big Falls) and Chikka Hebbe (Small Falls), and its waters are believed to contain medicinal herbs.
The Wayanad Route: Kerala's Green Oasis
The drive to Wayanad in Kerala offers a different flavour of the Western Ghats, with its winding roads cutting through verdant tea and spice plantations. This route also hides some magnificent waterfalls that serve as perfect pit stops. These natural wonders provide a refreshing break and an opportunity to immerse yourself in the region's raw beauty before you even reach your final destination.
Soochipara Falls: The Needle Rock Wonder
Also known as Sentinel Rock Waterfalls, Soochipara is a stunning three-tiered waterfall near Meppadi, cascading from a height of about 200 meters. The name 'Soochipara' translates to 'Needle Rock', referencing the sharp, imposing rocks surrounding the cascade. Reaching the falls involves a trek of about 2 kilometres from the parking area, which takes around 30 minutes through the forest. The effort is rewarded with a spectacular view and a large pool at the base where visitors can swim and bathe in the cool, clear water. The site is also a popular spot for rock climbing.
Chethalayam Falls: A Trekker's Delight
For those who prefer a quieter, more secluded experience, Chethalayam Falls near Sultan Bathery is an excellent choice. It's a seasonal waterfall that is most impressive during the monsoon months. The falls are reached via a 2-kilometre trek through the forest, which is a key part of the experience, offering chances for bird watching amidst the rich foliage. Because it is less frequented than other major falls in Wayanad, it offers a more tranquil atmosphere for visitors to connect with nature. Given its location, a guide is often recommended.
