What is the Amrit Bharat Express?
The Amrit Bharat Express is a new category of superfast passenger trains by Indian Railways designed for long-distance travel. Unlike premium services, its primary focus is on affordability and serving the masses, particularly on high-density routes connecting
major cities over 800 kilometres apart. Initially launched as a non-air-conditioned service with only Sleeper and General Unreserved coaches, it's targeted at budget-conscious travellers, migrant workers, and those undertaking long-haul journeys who prefer cost-effective options. The Key Technology: Push-Pull
The defining feature of the Amrit Bharat Express is its 'push-pull' technology. Each train has a locomotive at both the front and the rear. The front engine pulls while the rear engine pushes, allowing for significantly faster acceleration and deceleration. This technology is a game-changer, as it saves crucial time on routes with many curves, bridges, or speed restrictions. For passengers, this also means a smoother, jerk-free ride, thanks to the use of semi-permanent couplers similar to those in Vande Bharat trains, which eliminate the jolts often felt during starts and stops.
Onboard Features and Amenities
While positioned as a no-frills service, Amrit Bharat trains offer a significant upgrade over conventional express trains. Passengers can expect improved, ergonomically designed seats and berths, and mobile charging points with both USB-A and USB-C ports for every passenger. Other thoughtful additions include foldable snack tables, bottle holders, and radium-illuminated flooring strips for better visibility at night. The coaches have fully sealed gangways for better air circulation at high speeds and reduced noise, along with modern, hygienic toilets featuring an electro-pneumatic flushing system and automatic soap dispensers. Safety is enhanced with CCTV cameras and aerosol-based fire suppression systems.
Amrit Bharat vs. Vande Bharat
It's easy to get confused between the two, but they serve very different purposes. Vande Bharat Express is a premium, fully air-conditioned, semi-high-speed train for medium-distance daytime travel (under 10 hours). In contrast, the original Amrit Bharat trains are non-AC and designed for affordable, long-distance overnight journeys. While Vande Bharat focuses on speed and luxury with features like rotating seats and onboard catering, Amrit Bharat prioritizes accessibility and affordability for the common person. Put simply, if your priority is a budget-friendly sleeper for a long trip, Amrit Bharat is the answer. If you need a fast AC chair car for a day trip between major cities, Vande Bharat is your pick.
Fares, Booking, and Routes
The fare structure for Amrit Bharat is designed to be transparent and affordable, priced about 15% higher than a standard Mail/Express train. Crucially, it does not use dynamic pricing, so the fare remains constant regardless of demand. The service operates across a growing network of over 60 trains, connecting high-demand corridors like Darbhanga-Delhi, Malda-Bengaluru, and Gorakhpur-Mumbai. Indian Railways continues to announce new routes, with seven more approved in August 2026 to enhance connectivity. Interestingly, there is no Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) quota; you either get a confirmed berth or remain on the waitlist.
The Future: Amrit Bharat 3.0
Indian Railways is already evolving the service. The first trainset for 'Amrit Bharat 3.0' rolled out from the factory in August 2026. This next version is a significant upgrade, as it introduces a mix of AC and non-AC coaches, including First AC, Second AC, and Third AC, alongside Sleeper and General compartments. This marks a strategic shift to cater to a wider range of passengers, offering the comfort of air-conditioning on these efficient, long-distance routes while still maintaining an affordable travel ethos.
