The Silent Drain of Subscription Creep
One-click trials and irresistible offers for OTT platforms, music apps, and online courses make it incredibly easy to subscribe. While each service might only cost a few hundred rupees, the total can quickly add up. This gradual accumulation of recurring
charges is called 'subscription creep', and it's a modern budgeting challenge. Many of these subscriptions are set up and forgotten, creating a slow, silent drain on your bank account for services you may no longer use. Companies often make payment frictionless but cancellation cumbersome, counting on this 'set and forget' mentality. Over time, what seems like a collection of small, harmless fees can evolve into a substantial monthly outflow, diverting funds from savings or other financial goals.
Understanding UPI Autopay
Launched by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI Autopay is a feature designed to manage recurring payments seamlessly. It allows you to set up an e-mandate for regular payments like subscriptions, SIPs, and utility bills using any UPI app. You authorise the payment schedule once with your UPI PIN, and subsequent payments are debited automatically. This system works for various frequencies—daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly—and can be set for a fixed amount or up to a maximum limit, providing flexibility for bills that might vary slightly.
The Power of the Pre-Debit Notification
The most powerful feature of UPI Autopay for consumers is the mandatory pre-debit notification. By rule, the service provider or their payment aggregator must send you a notification at least 24 hours before any amount is scheduled to be debited. This simple alert is a game-changer. It transforms a passive, forgotten payment into a conscious checkpoint. This notification gives you the exact amount and the debit date, providing a regular, automated reminder of every single subscription you have active. It serves as a crucial moment to pause and ask: 'Do I still use this service? Do I still need it?'
Your Monthly Financial Health Check
Treating these pre-debit notifications as a monthly financial to-do list is the key to preventing subscription creep. When an alert arrives, take a moment to review it. Is the streaming service one you've watched in the last month? Is that premium news subscription still relevant? If not, UPI Autopay makes it easy to take action. Within your UPI app (like GPay, PhonePe, or Paytm), you can view all your active mandates in the 'Autopay' section. From there, you have full control to pause or cancel a mandate you no longer need, directly from your phone. This turns a passive expense into an active financial decision, putting you firmly back in control.
Beyond Streaming: A Tool for All Recurring Costs
While streaming services are a common culprit, the utility of checking UPI Autopay mandates extends much further. This system is increasingly used for a wide range of recurring payments. This includes mutual fund SIPs, insurance premiums, mobile recharges, and payments for digital tools or memberships. For most general subscriptions, transactions up to ₹15,000 can be processed automatically without needing a PIN for every debit. By regularly reviewing all your mandates, you create a complete picture of your recurring financial commitments. This habit ensures no payment goes unnoticed, making your budget more accurate and preventing any service from billing you without your explicit, ongoing consent.
