A New Eye in the Sky
On September 4, 2026, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the EOS-05 satellite, a sophisticated Earth observation spacecraft. Launched aboard the GSLV-F17 rocket from Sriharikota, EOS-05 is not just another satellite; it's
India's first imaging satellite designed to operate from a geosynchronous orbit, approximately 36,000 kilometres above the Earth. This mission represents a significant comeback and a major technological leap, especially after the previous attempt to launch a similar satellite, EOS-03 (also known as GISAT-1), failed in 2021. The successful launch of EOS-05, which weighs around 2,367 kg, demonstrates the increasing capability and reliability of India's GSLV rocket, which carried its heaviest payload to date with this mission. With an expected mission life of 10 years, EOS-05 is poised to become a critical national asset.
The Geostationary Advantage
The true game-changing aspect of EOS-05 lies in its orbit. Most of India's previous Earth observation satellites, like those in the Cartosat and RISAT series, operate in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), just a few hundred kilometres up. While LEO satellites can capture high-resolution images, they are constantly moving at high speed and can only view a specific location for a few minutes before needing to circle the globe to pass over it again. In contrast, EOS-05 is in a geosynchronous orbit. This means it orbits at the same speed as the Earth's rotation, allowing it to remain seemingly fixed over the Indian subcontinent. This unique positioning provides the ability to monitor a vast geographical area continuously, rather than in brief snapshots. This trade-off—sacrificing some proximity for far greater persistence—is what enables the near real-time, wider-area monitoring that makes EOS-05 so powerful.
Transforming Disaster Management
One of the most immediate and impactful applications of EOS-05 will be in disaster management. India is frequently exposed to rapidly developing natural disasters such as cyclones, floods, and forest fires. A satellite in LEO might pass over an area hours before or after a critical event unfolds. EOS-05’s constant gaze can change that entirely. It is designed to image the entire Indian landmass every 30 minutes, and for select areas of interest, it can provide updates as frequently as every five minutes. This near real-time monitoring will allow authorities to track the formation and progress of cyclones, assess the spread of floodwaters, and monitor forest fires as they happen. This capability provides invaluable data for issuing timely warnings, planning more effective emergency responses, and coordinating recovery efforts on the ground.
A Boost for Agriculture and Security
Beyond disaster response, the satellite's applications extend to crucial sectors like agriculture and national security. The multi-spectral imagers on board can provide detailed data on crop health, vegetation, and water resources, helping to forecast yields and manage agricultural planning more efficiently. For national security, the strategic dimension is undeniable. Having a 'Hawkeye' in the sky that provides 24/7 surveillance over a fixed region gives India a significant advantage in monitoring its extensive land and sea borders. The ability to detect changes in terrain or unusual activity in near real-time provides a much faster reaction capability compared to waiting for a conventional satellite to revisit a location. This persistent monitoring strengthens the country's strategic surveillance capabilities significantly.
The Path Forward
The successful launch and deployment of EOS-05 is a landmark achievement for ISRO and for India. It not only overcomes the setback of the 2021 mission failure but also places India in a select group of nations with the capability to operate a high-resolution imaging satellite from a geosynchronous orbit. After its launch into a transfer orbit, ISRO engineers have been performing a series of complex orbit-raising manoeuvres to carefully guide the satellite to its final position 36,000 km above the Earth. Each successful step brings the satellite closer to becoming fully operational.
