Beyond the Bridal Glow
Gold and silver have always been staples in an Indian beauty kit, synonymous with weddings, festivals, and grand occasions. A touch of gold on the eyelids or a shimmer of silver highlighter has long been the go-to for a regal, celebratory finish. While
that classic glamour remains timeless, makeup artists and beauty enthusiasts are now exploring the edgier side of metallics. The new trend is less about an all-over shimmer and more about strategic, high-impact placements that turn the face into a canvas for art. It’s a move from purely decorative to powerfully expressive.
The Rise of the Chrome Finish
One of the biggest drivers of this trend is the rise of chrome. Unlike a soft shimmer, a chrome finish offers a liquid-metal, almost mirror-like reflectivity. This futuristic effect is being seen in sharp, graphic eyeliners that trace abstract shapes above the crease or extend into dramatic wings. Peter Philips, creative director for Dior Makeup, recently used delicate strips of silver to create a fine, hair-like liner just above the lashes for a runway show. The effect was subtle from the front but caught the light with every blink, showcasing how metallics can provide a surprising flash of brilliance. This high-shine look can also be achieved with liquid metallic shadows or by using a mixing medium with loose pigments for an intense, foiled effect.
Strategic and Subtle Accents
Experimental doesn't always have to mean extreme. The new metallic trend also embraces subtlety through smart, unexpected placement. A tiny dab of silver chrome on the inner corner of the eye makes the eyes appear brighter and wider. A touch of gold highlighter on the cupid's bow can add dimension to the lips, while a light dusting on the brow bone provides a modern, ethereal lift. Some makeup artists are even using tiny metallic decals and embellishments, placing them near the temples or at the outer corners of the eyes for a touch of playful sparkle that feels like wearable art. These small details pack a big punch, elevating an otherwise simple makeup look into something special and intentional.
Foiled Lids and Molten Lips
Texture is playing a huge role in this metallic renaissance. The 'foiled' eyeshadow look, which creates the appearance of a thin sheet of metal pressed onto the lid, is gaining massive popularity. It delivers an intense, opaque shine that is more textured and dimensional than a traditional powder eyeshadow. This effect can be achieved with creamy, highly-pigmented formulas or by applying a metallic pigment over a tacky primer to maximise its reflective quality. The trend is even extending to lips, where metallic finishes can create the illusion of fuller, more dimensional lips. A swipe of bronze or gold over a matte lipstick can transform the look entirely, giving it a molten, glamorous edge that feels both modern and daring.
Making the Trend Your Own
While runway looks can seem intimidating, this trend is surprisingly adaptable. The easiest way to start is with a metallic eyeliner. Try swapping your classic black wing for a sharp silver or gold one. If you're feeling more adventurous, press a high-shine metallic shadow onto the center of your eyelid over your usual makeup for a pop of light. The key is to keep the rest of the makeup relatively balanced. If you're going for a bold metallic eye, consider a more neutral lip to let the eyes be the focus. On Indian skin tones, warm golds, coppers, and bronzes are especially flattering, providing a regal glow that never looks out of place. Silver, on the other hand, offers a cooler, more futuristic vibe.
