Prompts Are More Than Just Questions
A simple instruction given to an AI, like “write a poem about the rain,” is unlikely to be considered a valuable asset. But in a business context, prompts are rarely so simple. A sophisticated prompt designed to produce a specific marketing campaign,
a detailed financial analysis, or a functioning piece of software code is a complex creation. It involves significant intellectual effort, iteration, and specialized knowledge. These are not just questions; they are carefully engineered instructions that can be considered valuable intellectual property, similar to source code or a design schematic. A shared prompt library must do more than just store text; it should function as an asset management system that clearly explains the ownership and usage rights for every entry. This means embedding metadata within each prompt that specifies who created it, when it was created, and its intended use. Just as a photograph contains EXIF data about the camera and settings used to take it, a prompt should carry its own passport of information. This could include details on authorship, modification history, and licensing terms (e.g., for internal use only, royalty-free, or restricted to a specific project). Companies like PromptFluent and AICamp are already developing platforms with features like version control, audit logs, and role-based access to bring this level of governance to prompt management.
