Time Your Workouts Wisely
October may be cooler, but the midday sun can still be intense. The best times for outdoor exercise are early in the morning or late in the evening. A morning workout, between 6:00 AM and 8:00 AM, lets you soak in some gentle sun and has been shown to help
with consistency. An evening session, after 6:00 PM, is also excellent as the day's heat subsides. In many cities, these times also help you avoid the worst of the traffic-related air pollution. However, it's crucial to check the daily Air Quality Index (AQI), as pollution levels can be high in the mornings in some regions, especially in North India.
Understand Regional Weather Shifts
India's weather in October is not uniform; it's a month of transition. In North India, including Delhi and Rajasthan, the weather becomes pleasantly warm and dry, with average temperatures around 30-34°C, ideal for outdoor activities. In contrast, South and East India, including Kerala and Kolkata, may still experience the 'retreating monsoon' with light showers and humidity. In Central and Western India, like Mumbai, the weather can be dry but is sometimes marked by a period of intense 'October Heat' before cooling down. Tailor your expectations and hydration strategy based on your local conditions.
Dress in Smart, Breathable Layers
With fluctuating temperatures, layering is key. Start with a base layer of moisture-wicking fabric, like polyester or a polyester-spandex blend, which pulls sweat away from your skin. Avoid cotton for your workout gear, as it absorbs moisture, becomes heavy, and can make you feel cold and damp as your body cools down. A light second layer, such as a zip-up jacket, can be worn for your warm-up and easily removed as your body temperature rises. For outdoor sessions, lighter-coloured clothing is often recommended as it absorbs less heat.
Adapt Your Exercise, Don't Overdo It
If you've spent the monsoon months indoors, your body needs time to acclimatise to outdoor conditions. Start with lower-intensity activities like brisk walking, light jogging, or cycling for 20-30 minutes. This is a great time for park yoga or bodyweight exercises. As your body adapts to the heat and humidity, you can gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workouts. Always listen to your body. If you feel dizzy, excessively tired, or your muscles start to cramp, it's a sign to take a break, hydrate, and rest.
Stay Hydrated and Mind Your Air Quality
Cooler weather can be deceptive, but hydration remains critical. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your workout. For longer or more intense sessions, consider an electrolyte drink to replenish lost salts. Another significant concern, particularly in urban India, is air quality. October often marks the beginning of the pollution season in cities like Delhi and Mumbai. Always check the real-time Air Quality Index (AQI) on a reliable app before heading out. On days with 'poor' or 'severe' AQI, it's safer to reduce the intensity of your outdoor workout or move it indoors to protect your lungs.
