A New Chapter in Overnight Travel
Indian Railways is rolling out its second Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, the Sant Ravidas Express, which is set to be flagged off on July 17. This new service will connect two major cultural and spiritual hubs: Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and Chheharta,
near Amritsar, in Punjab. Following the launch of the first sleeper service between Howrah and Kamakhya in January 2026, this second train underscores a significant shift in long-distance rail travel, moving towards modern, self-propelled trainsets designed for passenger comfort and speed. These trains are not just an alternative to existing services like the Rajdhani Express; they represent a fundamental reimagining of what an overnight journey can be.
Designed for Comfort and Convenience
The Vande Bharat sleeper is engineered from the ground up for a better resting experience. Each train consists of 16 fully air-conditioned coaches, including First, Second, and Third AC tiers, accommodating up to 823 passengers. The berths are wider and feature better cushioning, designed ergonomically for a more restful sleep. A standout feature is the train's design for a smoother, jerk-free ride, thanks to advanced couplers and superior suspension that minimize vibrations and noise. Amenities that were once luxuries are now standard, such as sensor-based lighting, bio-vacuum toilets with odour control, and automatic doors that create a quieter, dust-free interior. For First AC passengers, there's even the exclusive facility of an onboard hot shower.
Strategic Timings for the Modern Traveller
The schedule for the Varanasi-Chheharta service highlights its utility for both business and leisure travellers. The train departing from Varanasi (No. 14623) leaves at 7:05 PM, allowing passengers to finish a workday before boarding. It travels overnight and reaches Amritsar the next afternoon at 4:35 PM. This timing is perfect for creating spontaneous city-breaks. You can leave a city on a Thursday or Saturday evening and wake up well-rested for a weekend of exploring. This model effectively saves travellers the cost of a hotel for one night, turning travel time into rest time—a key value proposition that is making travellers reconsider short-haul flights and luxury buses.
Connecting More Than Just Cities
The route for the Sant Ravidas Express is strategically important, linking major commercial and pilgrimage centers across Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab. With stops at cities like Lucknow, Bareilly, Moradabad, and Ludhiana, it enhances connectivity across one of India's most crucial corridors. This improved access is expected to boost local tourism and make travel easier for students, families, and professionals who frequently travel between these regions. By providing a premium, reliable, and faster overnight option, Indian Railways is not just connecting destinations; it is fostering economic and cultural exchange by making travel more accessible and efficient. The success of these initial routes will likely pave the way for a wider network, with plans for more Vande Bharat sleepers to roll out in the coming years.
