A Push for Better Hygiene and Comfort
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has become the second zonal railway in the country to implement a new initiative focused on improving the onboard experience for passengers. The enhanced services aim to deliver a higher standard of cleanliness, hygiene,
and comfort through a combination of technology and dedicated staff. The upgrades include more regular cleaning of coaches, better maintenance of washrooms, efficient waste management, and the timely distribution of fresh linen. This move signals a significant step towards modernising passenger amenities on some of the region's most important train routes.
1. & 2. New Jalpaiguri Vande Bharat Express Trains
Two of the five trains receiving these upgrades are the New Jalpaiguri–Patna Vande Bharat Express and the New Jalpaiguri–Guwahati Vande Bharat Express. These services officially launched with the enhanced features on October 14, 2026. For passengers on these premier chair-car trains, the changes are centered on maintaining a pristine environment throughout the journey. The initiative uses digital monitoring and AI-based assessments to ensure cleaning schedules are met. This technology-first approach helps maintain the high standards expected on India's flagship Vande Bharat services.
3. Kamakhya–SMVT Bengaluru Express
This long-distance service, connecting Kamakhya in Assam to Bengaluru, was also equipped with the new onboard services starting October 14, 2026. Given the extended travel time on this route, the focus on hygiene and comfort is particularly welcome. Passengers can expect better-kept washrooms and cleaner coaches. A key part of the upgrade is a system for faster complaint resolution. Dedicated teams will address passenger issues, from basic technical assistance to water availability, with a target resolution time of two hours.
4. Guwahati–Kolkata Garib Rath Express
The Guwahati–Kolkata Garib Rath Express, a vital and affordable air-conditioned service, began operating with the enhanced services on October 10, 2026. The upgrades aim to elevate the travel experience on this popular train. In addition to improved cleanliness, the system introduces a new layer of accountability. Service verification is geo-tagged, and staff are tracked digitally, creating a centralized monitoring mechanism to ensure that the promised standards of maintenance and hygiene are consistently delivered.
5. Dibrugarh–Mumbai LTT Express
Another major long-haul train, the Dibrugarh–Mumbai LTT Express, implemented the new services on October 11, 2026. For travellers undertaking this cross-country journey, the changes promise a more comfortable and reliable experience. The system allows for real-time passenger feedback through star ratings. This data, combined with AI-driven assessments, will be used to evaluate performance and drive continuous improvements, ensuring that passenger feedback directly contributes to the quality of service on future trips.
