What is the e-Pay Tax Service?
The e-Pay Tax service is a unified platform on the official Income Tax e-filing portal (incometax.gov.in) designed to streamline all direct tax payments. Previously, taxpayers often had to navigate between the tax portal and their bank's website, a process
that could be clunky and confusing. This new system brings the entire workflow—creating a payment request, choosing a payment method, and getting a receipt—into one place. The key change is that it is now mandatory to first generate a Challan Reference Number (CRN) on the e-filing portal before making a payment. This CRN acts as a unique identifier for your specific tax payment, ensuring accuracy and making tracking easier.
Simpler Payments with More Options
The biggest advantage of this integrated module is the sheer variety of payment methods now available directly through the portal. While net banking through authorised banks is still an option, the system now includes a robust 'Payment Gateway' mode. This opens the door for payments via Credit Cards, Debit Cards, and, most significantly, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which has become a primary transaction method for many Indians. This increased flexibility means you are no longer restricted to a handful of authorised banks for direct net banking payments. You can use almost any bank's services through the payment gateway, RTGS/NEFT, or UPI options, making compliance more accessible for everyone.
A Step-by-Step Guide to Paying Your Tax
The process, whether you are logged in or using the pre-login facility, is designed to be intuitive. First, you navigate to the 'e-Pay Tax' section on the portal. You will be asked to enter your PAN/TAN and a mobile number for OTP verification. Once verified, you proceed to create a 'New Payment'. Here, you select the relevant assessment year and the type of payment, such as advance tax or self-assessment tax. After you input the breakdown of your tax liability (e.g., basic tax, cess), the system generates a unique Challan Reference Number (CRN). With this CRN, you can then select your preferred payment mode—Net Banking, Debit Card, Pay at Bank Counter, RTGS/NEFT, or the versatile Payment Gateway (for UPI/Credit Card). After selecting your mode, you complete the transaction on the chosen platform, and you're done.
Instant Verification, No More Waiting
One of the most significant improvements is how payment verification is handled. In older systems, after making a payment, taxpayers often had to wait for the amount to be reflected in their Form 26AS or log back into the portal to confirm if the payment was successfully recorded by the department. The new e-Pay Tax service eliminates this uncertainty. Once your payment is successful, the portal provides immediate confirmation. You will receive a confirmation via email and SMS on your registered details. Furthermore, the challan receipt is available for download instantly in your 'Payment History' on the e-filing portal. This real-time update provides immediate peace of mind and simplifies record-keeping, as your proof of payment is generated and stored securely within your tax account.
