The ₹500 Fee is Here to Stay
In a significant move for Indian tourists, the Embassy of Japan in India has confirmed that the visa fee for Indian passport holders will remain at ₹500. This applies to both single-entry and multiple-entry visas, preserving a special arrangement for Indian citizens.
The news comes as a welcome clarification after Japan announced a major global visa fee hike for most other nationalities, which took effect from July 1, 2026. While travellers from other countries applying in India now face fees as high as ₹8,650 for a single-entry visa, the cost for Indians remains unchanged, making Japan an even more attractive destination.
What This Means for Your Travel Plans
This decision solidifies Japan's status as one of the most affordable and accessible premium destinations for Indian travellers. The unchanged visa fee structure is a significant advantage, especially as interest in outbound travel to Japan continues to surge. It's important to note that while the base visa fee is ₹500, applications are processed through authorised VFS Global centres, which apply a mandatory service charge of around ₹800 per application. Therefore, the total minimum cost you should budget for is approximately ₹1,300. This is still substantially lower than the fees for many other countries and a small price for unlocking a dream trip.
How to Apply: The Process Explained
Indian citizens must apply for their visa before travelling, as Japan does not offer a visa-on-arrival facility for Indian passport holders. The application process is managed through VFS Global centres across the country. You can apply up to three months before your intended departure date. For many tourists, the process has been further simplified with the introduction of the JAPAN eVISA system in April 2024. This allows eligible travellers to apply online for a single-entry short-term visa (for a stay of up to 90 days), which means you might not need to physically submit your documents at a centre. The outcome is a digital "Visa Issuance Notice" that you can display on your phone at check-in and immigration.
Essential Documents You Will Need
Whether applying through the traditional paper route or the e-visa system, a clear set of documents is required. Make sure you have a valid passport with at least six months of validity and two blank pages. You will also need a completed visa application form, a recent passport-sized photograph with a white background, and confirmed return flight bookings. In addition, you must provide proof of accommodation for your entire stay and a detailed day-by-day itinerary. To demonstrate financial stability, you will need to submit your last six months of bank statements and proof of income, such as recent tax payment certificates.
A Note on Transit Visas
One important change that affects all travellers is the discontinuation of the separate transit visa category. This means if you are planning to pass through Japan on your way to another country and need to enter Japan during your layover, you will now have to apply for an appropriate short-term visitor visa instead. This requires the same level of planning as a tourist visa, so be sure to factor this into your travel arrangements if you have a long stopover in Japan.
