A New Standard for Onboard Hygiene
A major focus of the upgrade is tackling the long-standing issue of onboard hygiene. The most significant change has been the widespread installation of advanced bio-toilets across nearly all passenger coaches. These units are a major leap from older
systems, preventing the direct discharge of waste onto the tracks. This not only makes the journey more pleasant but also significantly reduces environmental pollution. Beyond the toilets, Indian Railways is implementing technology-driven cleaning services, with some zones using AI to monitor whether standards are being met. On many long-distance routes, dedicated On-Board Housekeeping Services (OBHS) are responsible for the continuous cleaning of coaches and washrooms throughout the journey, a significant improvement from cleanups only at the departure station.
Redefining Comfort on the Move
Passenger comfort is another cornerstone of this ambitious project. New trainsets, such as the Amrit Bharat Express, and upgraded coaches feature 'jerk-free' semi-permanent couplers. These connectors between coaches significantly reduce the familiar jolts during acceleration and braking, leading to a much smoother ride. Inside, seats and berths are being ergonomically redesigned with better cushioning and aesthetics. This is particularly notable in the new Amrit Bharat trains, which are designed to offer an upgraded experience for non-AC travel. For overnight journeys, this focus on a smoother, quieter ride and more comfortable berths aims to provide passengers with a more restful sleep, transforming a tiring trip into a more refreshing one.
Modern Amenities for the Connected Traveller
Recognising the needs of the modern passenger, these upgraded trains are being fitted with a host of new amenities. One of the most welcome changes is the provision of mobile and laptop charging points, which are becoming a standard feature in newer coaches, including those in sleeper and general classes. Old, dim lighting is being replaced with bright, energy-efficient LED panels, with many berths also getting individual reading lights. To keep passengers informed, digital display screens showing the next station, arrival times, and other crucial information are being installed. For enhanced security, CCTV cameras are also being fitted in coaches and luggage areas, making travel safer for everyone.
What Trains Are Getting a Makeover?
This upgrade initiative is not just for a select few premium services. While new trains like the Amrit Bharat Express and the Vande Bharat Sleeper are being built with these features from the ground up, improvements are being rolled out across the network. Indian Railways has been actively identifying long-distance trains with journey times exceeding 40 hours for enhanced, end-to-end monitoring of cleanliness and amenities. Recently, the Northeast Frontier Railway introduced technology-driven services on five major trains, including Vande Bharat and Garib Rath services, to ensure better upkeep. This phased approach means that over time, a significant portion of the trains that carry millions of Indians every day will see these substantial improvements, making comfortable and clean travel more accessible to everyone.
