Understanding the Onam Rush
Every year, lakhs of people travel to their hometowns in Kerala to celebrate Onam, creating an enormous demand for train tickets. Regular trains on popular routes from cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, and Mangaluru get fully booked within minutes of reservations
opening, often 120 days in advance. To manage this surge, Indian Railways, particularly the Southern Railway zone, announces 'Special Fare Special' trains. These are additional services not on the regular schedule, introduced specifically to ease the festive load. However, these trains are limited, and competition for a berth is fierce, making a strategic approach essential.
Finding Official Announcements First
The key to getting ahead is knowing where to look for credible information. Unofficial WhatsApp messages can be misleading. The most reliable sources are official announcements from the railways. You should regularly monitor the Southern Railway's official website and its press release section. Their official account on X (formerly Twitter) is also a primary source for quick updates. The National Train Enquiry System (NTES) website and app are also excellent resources that may list new trains. Announcements for 2026 have already begun, with special services connecting Mangaluru, Chennai, and Thiruvananthapuram announced in early July.
Your Pre-Booking Action Plan
Success on booking day depends on the preparation you do beforehand. Simply waiting for the announcement is not enough. First, ensure your IRCTC account is active and you remember your password. Use the 'Master List' feature on the IRCTC website or app to save the details of all passengers (name, age, gender, ID proof) in advance. This saves critical seconds during the booking process. Decide on your preferred payment method—UPI, net banking, or credit/debit card—and ensure it's ready for a quick transaction. Having your payment details at hand avoids last-minute failures.
Booking Day: A Minute-by-Minute Strategy
Special train bookings often open at 8:00 AM on a specified date, and you need to be ready. Log in to your IRCTC account at least 10-15 minutes before the booking window opens. Have your journey details (station codes, date) decided. As soon as bookings open, select the train, use your saved Master List to autofill passenger details, and proceed to payment immediately. Speed is everything. If the website seems slow, the IRCTC Rail Connect app can sometimes be faster during peak hours. Don't waste time debating berth preferences; your goal is to secure any confirmed ticket first.
Decoding the Announcements and Having a Plan B
When an announcement is made, pay close attention to the train number, travel dates, and booking opening date. For instance, Southern Railway recently announced Train No. 06126 from Mangaluru Central to Chennai Egmore and Train No. 06125 for the return journey, with specific running dates between July and September. If you miss out on the initial booking, don't despair. Keep an eye on the Tatkal quota, which opens one day before the journey at 10 AM for AC classes and 11 AM for non-AC classes. Also, consider flexible options like booking to a nearby station or exploring different travel classes, which might have more availability.
