The Trouble with Chips
Let's be honest, potato chips are delicious. However, they are often deep-fried, making them high in calories and unhealthy fats. A 100-gram serving of potato chips can contain over 530 calories and more than 30 grams of fat. They offer little nutritional
value beyond carbohydrates and are often referred to as 'empty calories'. The high temperatures used in frying can also lead to the formation of acrylamide, a chemical that studies have suggested could be harmful. While an occasional indulgence is fine, regular consumption can contribute to weight gain and other health concerns.
Meet Your New Snack Heroes: Makhana and Chickpeas
This is where traditional Indian snacks like makhana (fox nuts) and chickpeas (chana) come in. Both are nutritional powerhouses that can be roasted to crispy perfection, offering that satisfying crunch without the guilt. They are naturally gluten-free and can be seasoned in countless ways to suit your palate. By making these at home, you control the amount of oil and salt, creating a truly wholesome alternative. Makhana is particularly good for those managing blood sugar levels, while chickpeas are a fantastic source of plant-based protein.
The Mighty Makhana (Fox Nuts)
Makhana, or popped water lily seeds, are incredibly light and low in calories. A 100-gram serving has around 350 calories, significantly less than potato chips, and is very low in fat. They are rich in essential minerals like magnesium, potassium, and calcium, which are important for heart and bone health. Makhana is also a good source of protein and fibre, which helps you feel full for longer and aids in digestion. Their antioxidant properties also help fight inflammation in the body.
Recipe: Simple Roasted Makhana
Making your own roasted makhana is incredibly simple and takes less than 15 minutes. Ingredients: 3 cups of makhana, 1 tablespoon of ghee or coconut oil, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of chaat masala, and a pinch of turmeric powder. Instructions: Heat a wide pan on low to medium heat. Add the makhana and dry roast them for about 7-8 minutes, stirring frequently, until they are crisp. To test, take one and crush it between your fingers; it should crumble easily. In the same hot pan, turn off the heat, add the ghee or oil, salt, chaat masala, and turmeric. Immediately add the roasted makhana and toss everything together until the nuts are evenly coated with the spices. Let them cool completely before storing in an airtight container.
The Powerful Chickpea (Chana)
Chickpeas, also known as chana or garbanzo beans, are another excellent snack choice. They are packed with plant-based protein and dietary fibre. A one-cup serving provides a substantial amount of your daily protein and fibre needs, which helps with appetite control and digestive health. Chickpeas are also rich in minerals like iron, manganese, and folate. The combination of protein and fibre helps in stabilising blood sugar levels, making them a great snack for sustained energy without the crash.
Recipe: Spicy Roasted Chickpeas
These crunchy bites are addictive in the best way. Ingredients: One 15-ounce can of chickpeas, 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of cumin powder, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 1/4 teaspoon of red chilli powder. Instructions: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Drain and rinse the chickpeas thoroughly. The most crucial step is to pat them completely dry with a towel; this ensures they get crispy. In a bowl, toss the dry chickpeas with olive oil and all the spices until they are evenly coated. Spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Roast for 20-30 minutes, shaking the pan halfway through, until they are golden brown and crispy. Let them cool before eating, as they will get crunchier as they cool.
