Inside every one of us is a 24-hour internal clock known as the circadian rhythm. This biological pacemaker governs countless processes, but its most famous job is managing your sleep-wake cycle. It tells you when to feel alert and when to feel sleepy.

Red, amber, and deep orange light have a minimal effect on your body's sleep signals. This is because the special cells in our eyes are highly sensitive to blue light but barely react to red light. Switching to these warmer tones in the two to three hours before bed is one of the most direct ways to help your body naturally prepare for sleep, allowing melatonin to rise and your core body temperature to drop, which are both essential for deep rest.
A Game-Changer for Shift Workers
For shift workers, this concept is revolutionary. Your schedule is out of sync with the natural sun, so you must create your own sunrise and sunset. If you finish a night shift in the early morning, the bright morning sun tells your brain it's time to be awake, right when you need to sleep. This is where light management becomes crucial. Studies show that circadian-informed lighting can significantly improve alertness during a night shift and lead to longer, better-quality sleep afterward. Upon finishing your shift, wearing dark, blue-blocking sunglasses on the way home can help prevent the morning light from suppressing your melatonin. Once home, you can create an artificial dusk with warm, dim lighting to signal to your body that your day is ending and it’s time to sleep.
Simple Steps to Get Started
You don't need an expensive, automated system to benefit from this science. Start with simple, practical changes.
