Kedarkantha Trek, Uttarakhand
Often hailed as the quintessential winter trek, Kedarkantha is a favourite for a reason. It’s one of the most popular treks for beginners who want to experience walking in the snow. The trail, located in Govind Wildlife Sanctuary, takes you through enchanting
pine forests, quaint villages, and wide-open clearings. What makes it ideal for novices is the well-marked path and a gradual ascent to its 12,500-foot summit. The reward at the top is a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of famous Himalayan peaks like Swargarohini and Bandarpoonch. While it’s accessible for much of the year, trekking between December and February transforms the landscape into a magical winter wonderland, making it an unforgettable first Himalayan adventure.
Valley of Flowers, Uttarakhand
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Valley of Flowers is a monsoon marvel. Unlike treks focused on snow-capped summits, this one is about life and colour. From mid-July to mid-August, this high-altitude valley explodes with hundreds of species of alpine flowers, creating a vibrant, living carpet. The trek itself is considered easy to moderate, making it accessible to beginners and families. The trail is well-paved in most places as it’s part of the pilgrimage route to Hemkund Sahib. The journey begins from Govindghat, with the village of Ghangaria serving as a base camp, as overnight stays in the valley aren't permitted. The easiest day involves a relatively flat 3.5 km walk into the main valley, where you are free to explore the floral spectacle.
Nag Tibba, Uttarakhand
If you're short on time but still want a genuine Himalayan experience, Nag Tibba is the perfect weekend trek. Known as the 'Serpent's Peak', it's the highest peak in the lesser Himalayan region of Uttarakhand's Garhwal district. The trek is typically a two-day affair, starting from the village of Pantwari, which is easily accessible from Dehradun and Delhi. Reaching an altitude of 9,915 feet, the trail is a delight for those just starting their trekking journey. The path winds through lush forests and offers stunning views of the Garhwal Himalayas, including the peaks of Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Gangotri. Its short duration and moderate difficulty make it a popular choice for a quick mountain fix.
Brahmatal Trek, Uttarakhand
Another fantastic winter option, the Brahmatal trek offers a grand cinematic experience with relatively little effort. It is considered an easy-to-moderate trek, making it a great choice for fit beginners. The trail takes you to two stunning high-altitude lakes, Bekaltal and the eponymous Brahmatal, which often freeze over in winter, creating a surreal landscape. The trek starts from the village of Lohajung and winds through ancient oak and rhododendron forests. In spring, these forests are ablaze with red and pink flowers. During winter, they are draped in snow. A key highlight is the incredible, up-close view of towering peaks like Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti from the trail itself, a reward usually reserved for more strenuous treks.
Triund Trek, Himachal Pradesh
Just a short journey from the bustling town of McLeod Ganj, the Triund trek is one of the easiest and most popular trails in Himachal Pradesh. This short trek can be completed in a day, but an overnight stay is highly recommended to experience the stunning sunset and sunrise over the Dhauladhar range. The trail itself is a steady and gradual climb of about 9 kilometres, taking you through a beautiful mixed forest of oak, deodar, and rhododendron trees. Reaching an altitude of around 2,828 metres, the final destination is a large, verdant meadow that serves as a perfect campsite. It provides a magnificent panoramic view of the surrounding snow-capped mountains, making it a perfect introduction to the joys of Himalayan camping.
