The Allure of a Rain-Soaked Paradise
From June to September, Kodagu (Coorg) district in Karnataka sheds its sunny disposition for a dramatic, misty, and intensely romantic avatar. The air becomes thick with the scent of wet earth and blooming coffee blossoms. For ‘monsoon chasers’—travellers
who actively seek the beauty of the rainy season—this is paradise. The main draw? The region’s many waterfalls, which, fed by relentless rains, swell from gentle trickles into thunderous, cascading torrents of water. It’s a powerful, primal spectacle that attracts photographers, adventurers, and anyone looking to witness nature at its most majestic.
Abbey Falls: The Roaring Star
Arguably the most famous waterfall in Coorg, Abbey Falls (or Abbi Falls) is a must-visit. Located just a few kilometres from the main town of Madikeri, it’s easily accessible. During the monsoon, the water from the Kaveri river, combined with other streams, gushes down a wide rock face from a height of about 70 feet, creating a deafening roar and a cloud of fine mist that drenches the hanging bridge opposite it. The short walk down a flight of steps through a private coffee and spice plantation is an experience in itself. The sheer force and volume of the water during peak monsoon are both humbling and exhilarating. Be prepared for crowds, as its accessibility makes it a popular spot.
Iruppu Falls: The Sacred Cascade
Situated in the Brahmagiri mountain range, Iruppu Falls is not just a natural wonder but also a place of pilgrimage. Legend has it that the falls were created when Lord Rama and Lakshmana passed through the area, and Lakshmana shot an arrow into the hills to quench his brother’s thirst. The water is thus considered holy. This powerful, two-tiered waterfall plunges down 170 feet and is a spectacular sight in the monsoon. Reaching it involves a short but invigorating trek through the dense forest of the Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary. The sound of the water, the chirping of birds, and the lush green surroundings make the journey as memorable as the destination.
Mallalli Falls: The Adventurer's Prize
If you’re looking for something off the beaten path, Mallalli Falls is your reward. Tucked away at the foot of the Pushpagiri Hills, this is one of the most magnificent waterfalls in Coorg, where the Kumaradhara river takes a dramatic plunge of over 200 feet. Reaching it is an adventure. The final stretch involves a bumpy jeep ride followed by a trek down several hundred steps. In the monsoon, the path can be slippery and challenging, but the view is worth every effort. You’re greeted by a colossal, milky-white cascade crashing into the gorge below, sending up a perpetual spray. It’s less crowded, offering a more raw and immersive experience with nature.
Know Before You Go: Monsoon Travel Tips
Visiting Coorg during the monsoon is magical, but requires preparation. Roads can be slippery and occasionally prone to small landslides, so drive carefully. Waterproof everything: pack a good raincoat, waterproof footwear with excellent grip, and a dry bag for your electronics. Leeches are common on trails, so carry salt or a sanitiser, and consider wearing leech socks. It’s also wise to book your accommodation in advance, as many travellers flock to the hills during this season. Embrace the rain, sip on some hot, locally grown coffee, and enjoy the unparalleled beauty of a region that truly comes to life when the skies open up.
