Why The Monsoon Is Perfect For Indoor Plants
The Indian monsoon creates a naturally high-humidity environment that many popular houseplants adore. This is because most of them are tropical in origin and feel right at home during the rainy season. The increased moisture in the air means plants lose
less water through their leaves, which can make them more resilient and easier to care for, especially for beginners. The key is choosing the right plants that won't just survive but actively thrive in the lower light and damp conditions, turning your home into a lush green haven. However, it's crucial to ensure good drainage and avoid overwatering, as the moist conditions can also encourage root rot.
Snake Plant (Sansevieria trifasciata)
Often called the ‘un-killable’ plant, the Snake Plant is a champion for beginners and busy people. Its stiff, upright leaves make a bold statement in any room. It is exceptionally tolerant of low light, which is common on overcast monsoon days, and has very low water requirements. In fact, overwatering is its biggest enemy, so the reduced need for watering during the humid monsoon is a perfect match. It is also celebrated for its air-purifying qualities, effectively removing toxins from the air, making your indoor space healthier.
ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)
With its wide, glossy, dark green leaves, the ZZ Plant is another superstar of the low-maintenance world. It is prized for its tolerance of neglect, thriving even if you forget to water it occasionally. Native to drought-prone parts of Africa, it stores water in its underground rhizomes, making it highly resistant to drying out. This makes it ideal for the monsoon when soil takes longer to dry. It handles low light well but truly shines in bright, indirect light. Its striking appearance adds a touch of modern elegance to any decor.
Money Plant (Epipremnum aureum or Pothos)
A staple in many Indian households, the Money Plant is famously easy to grow. Its trailing vines with heart-shaped leaves can be trained up a wall or left to cascade from a hanging basket. It is incredibly adaptable, thriving in a variety of light conditions and not demanding about watering. These plants enjoy the humidity of the monsoon season, which encourages lush growth. They are also great communicators; their leaves will start to droop slightly when they need water. As an added bonus, they are excellent at purifying the air.
Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)
If you want a plant that offers both beautiful foliage and elegant flowers, the Peace Lily is an excellent choice. It is renowned for its ability to thrive in low-light conditions, making it perfect for brightening up a dim corner. Peace Lilies love the high humidity that the monsoon brings. They are also known for being one of the best air-purifying plants, capable of removing common household toxins. While they prefer consistently moist soil, their leaves will droop dramatically to let you know when they are thirsty, taking the guesswork out of watering.
Aglaonema (Chinese Evergreen)
The Aglaonema, or Chinese Evergreen, is celebrated for its stunning, often variegated leaves and its remarkable ability to adapt to different indoor environments. It's one of the best choices for low-light situations and is quite forgiving if you're not perfect with your watering schedule. These plants flourish in the warm and humid conditions typical of the Indian monsoon, making it a great time to add one to your collection. With many varieties featuring patterns of silver, pink, or red, they add a splash of colour on even the greyest of rainy days.
