Secure Your Luggage Like a Pro
One of the biggest concerns during an overnight journey is the safety of your belongings. The most effective deterrent is a simple one: a sturdy lock and chain. Most berths have metal loops or bars underneath where you can secure your main suitcase or backpack.
This prevents anyone from grabbing your bag during a brief station halt or while you are asleep. For your valuables like a wallet, phone, and documents, never pack them in your main luggage. Keep them in a small daypack or a crossbody bag that stays with you at all times, even when you sleep. You can use this small bag as a pillow or keep it close to your body for added security.
Pack a Personal Comfort Kit
Sleeper class coaches do not provide bedding, so you have to bring your own. An inflatable neck pillow and a lightweight blanket or shawl can make a world of difference for getting quality rest. An old bedsheet is also a great addition; you can spread it over the berth for a clean, personal space. To block out the inevitable noise and light from stations and fellow passengers, a simple eye mask and a pair of earplugs are invaluable. This small kit helps create a private, comfortable cocoon, allowing you to arrive at your destination feeling more refreshed.
The Essential Hygiene Pack
Train washrooms can be a challenge, so a well-stocked hygiene kit is non-negotiable. Pack a small pouch with hand sanitiser, wet wipes, and your own toilet paper or tissues. A pair of rubber slippers are also recommended for using the toilets, as the floors can be wet and unhygienic. These simple items ensure you can maintain your personal cleanliness and stay healthy throughout the journey. A small, quick-dry towel is also more practical than a bulky one.
Stay Powered and Entertained
Long journeys can get boring, and you can't always rely on the train's charging points being available or functional. A fully charged power bank is an absolute must-have to keep your phone and other devices running. Before you leave, download movies, shows, podcasts, or music to your device, as train Wi-Fi is often unreliable. A good book or an e-reader is another excellent way to pass the time. Don’t forget your headphones to enjoy your entertainment without disturbing others.
Food and Water Wisdom
While station food can be a highlight, it's wise to be cautious. Pack some of your own snacks like fruits, biscuits, or home-cooked meals like theplas or sandwiches. This reduces your reliance on platform vendors, which can be a hit or miss in terms of hygiene. Always carry your own reusable water bottle and fill it up whenever you can. It’s not only more hygienic but also more environmentally friendly. If you do buy food, try to order from authorised IRCTC vendors or apps.
Personal Safety and Awareness
Beyond securing your luggage, personal awareness is crucial. If traveling solo, especially as a woman, opting for an upper berth is often recommended as it offers more privacy and keeps you out of the general aisle traffic. Share your train number, coach, and seat details with a family member or friend so they can track your journey. Be cautious when interacting with strangers and politely decline any food or drink offered by fellow passengers you don't know. Trust your instincts; if a situation feels uncomfortable, move or seek help from the train conductor (TTE) or Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel.
