The New Era of Sri Lankan Travel
The idea of a quick, unplanned international trip often gets stalled by complicated visa procedures. However, Sri Lanka has recently changed the game for many travellers, including those from India. As of May 25, 2026, Sri Lanka has implemented a new
policy making the tourist visa process significantly easier and, for many, completely free. [10, 11] While the headline talks of a 'fast track' system, the reality is a simplified and fee-waived Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for tourists from 40 eligible countries, including India. [17] This move is designed to boost tourism and makes the island nation one of the most accessible destinations for a spur-of-the-moment holiday. The system requires travellers to get an ETA online before they travel, but the process is quick and approval is often received within hours. [17]
Understanding the Free ETA System
So, what exactly is this new system? It is not a visa-on-arrival in the traditional sense, but rather a mandatory pre-travel online authorization that is now free for tourists. [18] All foreign nationals from the 40 specified countries must obtain this ETA before arriving in Sri Lanka. [15] The good news for Indian passport holders is that the fee for this tourist ETA has been completely waived. [17] The free ETA grants a 30-day stay and, importantly, allows for double entry. This means you could even hop over to a neighbouring country and return to Sri Lanka within that 30-day window without needing a new authorization. [10] This flexibility is perfect for travellers looking to make the most of their time in the region.
How to Apply: A Quick Guide
Getting your free Sri Lanka ETA is a straightforward online process. You must apply through the official Department of Immigration & Emigration portal at eta.gov.lk. [3] Be cautious of third-party websites that may charge unnecessary fees. The process involves filling out a simple online form with your personal details, passport information, and travel plans. You will need to have your passport, a confirmed return or onward flight ticket, and details of your accommodation ready. [3, 6] Once you submit the application, approval is typically sent to your email within a few hours to a couple of business days. [14] It is crucial to print a copy of your ETA approval notice or have it saved on your phone, as airline staff at your departure airport and immigration officers upon arrival in Sri Lanka will ask to see it. [6, 17]
What You Need Upon Arrival
While the ETA is your key to entry, there are a few other documents you must have on hand when you land at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo. First, your passport must have at least six months of validity from your date of arrival. [3] You will also need to show your approved ETA, a confirmed return ticket to prove you intend to leave the island within the visa's validity, and sometimes proof of accommodation. [3, 6] It is also recommended that all travellers fill out the online Arrival/Departure card within three days of their flight by visiting the official immigration website. [21] Having all these documents organized will ensure your entry into the country is as smooth and fast as possible.
Planning Beyond the Visa
With the visa process simplified, you can focus on the fun part: planning your spontaneous adventure. Sri Lanka offers a diverse range of experiences packed into a relatively small island. For a quick trip, you could focus on one region. Consider the southern coast for its golden beaches in Mirissa or Galle, perfect for relaxing and whale watching. Alternatively, head to the central highlands to explore the lush tea plantations around Nuwara Eliya and Kandy. Thanks to the island's compact size, even a short trip allows for a rich taste of its culture, history, and natural beauty. With direct flights available from major Indian cities, getting there is just as easy as getting the visa.
