The Lingering Ghost of the Monsoon: Humidity
The primary culprit behind September's oppressive feel is humidity. During the monsoon, the atmosphere becomes saturated with moisture. As the rains begin to decrease, the air doesn't magically dry out overnight. Instead, this vast reservoir of moisture remains
suspended in the air. The land, still damp from months of rain, continues to release water vapour. This combination of high atmospheric moisture and warm ground creates a blanket of humidity that hangs heavy, especially in coastal and plain regions. Unlike the dry heat of summer, this humid heat is particularly stifling.
The Sun Makes a Comeback
A key feature of the active monsoon period is persistent cloud cover, which acts as a natural sunshade, blocking direct solar radiation and keeping daytime temperatures in check. As the monsoon system weakens and begins its withdrawal, the skies clear up. This allows the sun's rays to beat down with renewed intensity. The land absorbs this solar energy, causing air temperatures to rise steadily. When you combine these rising temperatures with the pre-existing high humidity, you get a recipe for uncomfortable and draining weather. This period marks the transition from the hot, rainy season to the cooler, dry winter.
It's Not the Heat, It's the 'Real Feel'
The discomfort isn't just in your head; it's a measurable phenomenon known as the 'heat index' or 'real feel' temperature. Our bodies cool down primarily through the evaporation of sweat. When humidity is high, the air is already laden with moisture, which significantly slows down this evaporation process. Your sweat clings to your skin instead of vanishing into the air, making it much harder for your body to shed heat. As a result, the temperature feels significantly hotter than what the thermometer reads. For example, an actual temperature of 32°C can feel like 38°C or higher when combined with 70-80% humidity. This is why September days can feel so draining even if the official temperature isn't record-breaking.
The 'October Heat' Phenomenon
This post-monsoon heat and humidity combo is so distinct that it has its own name in many parts of India: the 'October Heat'. While the headline focuses on September, the oppressive conditions often persist and can even intensify into the next month. This period is characterised by clear skies, high temperatures during the day, and high humidity. The phenomenon is most pronounced as the southwest monsoon trough weakens and is gradually replaced by a high-pressure system, leading to calmer winds that do little to disperse the trapped heat and moisture. While daytime temperatures are high, nights often become cool and pleasant, a signature of this transitional season.
What to Expect as the Season Turns
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) officially begins looking for signs of monsoon withdrawal after September 1st, a process marked by five continuous days of no rain and a drop in moisture content. According to recent forecasts, September 2026 may see below-normal rainfall and warmer-than-usual temperatures for most of the country, potentially intensifying this uncomfortable phase. This is attributed partly to strong El Niño conditions, which are often associated with weaker monsoon rainfall in India. The oppressive feeling is a temporary, albeit challenging, phase. As the high-pressure system fully establishes itself and moisture levels finally drop, the sticky heat will eventually give way to the crisp, dry air that signals the true arrival of the post-monsoon and pre-winter period.
