Sethan: India’s Original Igloo Village
Tucked away about 12 kilometres from Manali, the small Buddhist village of Sethan transforms into a snowy paradise each winter. Often called India's 'Igloo Village', it was one of the first places in the country to offer travellers the chance to sleep
inside a real snow igloo. Built by locals, these igloos are surprisingly warm inside, using compacted snow for insulation. Operators provide warm sleeping bags and hot water bottles to ensure a comfortable night. The experience isn't just about the stay; packages typically include meals and activities like skiing, snowboarding, and bonfire nights under starry skies. The season usually runs from mid-January to mid-March, but it's entirely dependent on snowfall, so always check with operators before booking.
Gulmarg: Camping Amidst Snowy Peaks
While famous for its world-class ski slopes, Gulmarg in Kashmir also offers incredible opportunities for snow camping. Although many operators focus on summer camping, specialised winter camping experiences allow you to sleep amidst the pristine, untouched wilderness of the Pir Panjal range. This is for the more adventurous at heart, offering a thrilling experience of camping at high altitudes, sometimes in temperatures dipping well below zero. Outfitters provide all-weather expedition tents, sub-zero rated sleeping bags, and often set up a full camp kitchen to serve hot Kashmiri meals. Imagine waking up to panoramic views of snow-laden peaks after a silent, starlit night. It is a surreal experience that connects you directly with the raw beauty of the Himalayas in winter.
Auli: A Skier's Paradise with a Camping Twist
Auli in Uttarakhand is renowned as one of India’s premier ski destinations, offering breathtaking 180-degree views of Himalayan giants like Nanda Devi. Beyond the slopes, Auli is also a fantastic spot for winter camping. Several operators set up camps, ranging from basic dome tents to more luxurious Swiss tents, allowing you to stay close to nature. Camping in the snow-covered meadows of Gorson, near Auli, is a popular choice. The experience often includes bonfires, guided day hikes, and, of course, skiing. It’s an ideal way to combine the thrill of winter sports with the tranquility of camping in a serene, snow-covered landscape. Waking up to a sunrise over the peaks after a night in a tent is a memory that lasts a lifetime.
Preparing for Your Snow Adventure
A trip involving igloos or snow camping requires careful preparation. The season is short and highly dependent on weather conditions, typically from late December to early March. Temperatures can be extreme, often falling to minus 10-15 degrees Celsius at night. While operators provide specialised gear like thermal sleeping bags, you must pack multiple layers of warm clothing, including thermals, fleece jackets, waterproof outer layers, snow boots, gloves, and a cap. Since these locations are remote, it's wise to carry a basic medical kit, any personal medications, and power banks, as electricity can be unreliable. Always book through a reputable operator who prioritises safety and provides experienced guides.
