Every regular train traveller in India knows the feeling: being assigned a berth near the coach entrance. The new Vande Bharat sleeper aims to finally solve the perennial disturbances associated with these less-than-desirable spots.
The All-Too-Common Berth Problem
For anyone who has
undertaken an overnight journey in an AC 3-Tier coach, berths near the doors are often seen as the least preferable. These spots, typically numbers 1 through 8 and those at the other end of the coach, are prone to constant disturbances. The perpetual opening and closing of the main coach door, the movement of passengers and vendors through the vestibule, and fluctuations in temperature and light can make for a restless night. This high-traffic zone means that sleep is often interrupted, a common complaint among travellers who find themselves in these berths on trains like the Rajdhani Express and other long-distance services.
A Smart Solution Through Design
The Vande Bharat sleeper, developed by manufacturers like BEML, introduces a thoughtful design change to tackle this issue head-on. Recent videos and passenger observations highlight that the new coaches feature a different entrance layout. Instead of the berths being immediately adjacent to the main door, there is an intermediary space. The design incorporates a sliding door that separates the main passenger corridor from the vestibule area. This creates a buffer zone, effectively shielding the nearest berths from the direct line of traffic, noise, and light from the entrance. This simple but effective modification means passengers can rest more peacefully, even if they are in a berth near the end of the coach.
Beyond the Berths: A New Standard of Comfort
The focus on passenger comfort extends throughout the Vande Bharat sleeper. The trains are self-propelled trainsets, which allows for smoother acceleration and deceleration, reducing the jerks common in conventional locomotive-hauled trains. The coaches are designed with improved soundproofing and sealed gangways to create a quieter travel environment. Inside, passengers will find ergonomically designed, bettererched berths, integrated reading lights with USB charging ports, and modern, odour-free bio-toilets. For those in AC First Class, there's even the added luxury of a hot water shower. These features collectively aim to provide an experience on par with European rail standards.
Safety and Speed at its Core
Engineered for a maximum operational speed of 160 kmph, the Vande Bharat sleeper is set to significantly cut down travel times on long distance routes. The recently launched Bengaluru Mumbai service, for example, reduces the journey by up to eight hours. Safety is also a paramount feature. The trainsets are built with austenitic stainless steel for durability and are equipped with advanced crash worthy elements. Crucially, they come fitted with Kavach, India's indigenous automatic train protection system, designed to prevent collisions. Furthermore, the coaches include advanced fire detection and suppression systems, CCTV surveillance, and emergency talk back units, ensuring a safer journey for all 823 passengers on board.
When Can You Experience It?
The era of the Vande Bharat sleeper is already here. After the first prototype was unveiled in September 2024, the first commercial service began in January 2026. The second service, connecting Bengaluru and Mumbai, was launched on November 1, 2026. With fares expected to be comparable to Rajdhani Express services, these trains are positioned as a premium yet accessible option for overnight travel. Indian Railways plans to continue rolling out more of these modern sleeper trains, with contracts in place for the manufacturing of over a hundred new trainsets, signalling a major upgrade for the nation's railway network.
