The Foundation: A Holistic Approach
At the heart of India's youth wellness strategy are comprehensive programmes that combine health and education. The Ayushman Bharat School Health and Wellness Programme is a cornerstone initiative, jointly run by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare
and the Ministry of Education. It aims to move beyond a fragmented approach to health by creating an integrated system within schools. The programme designates two teachers in every government and government-aided school as ‘Health and Wellness Ambassadors’. These ambassadors lead weekly, activity-based sessions on 11 thematic areas, turning students into ‘Health and Wellness Messengers’ for their communities. This initiative is complemented by the Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram (RKSK), which focuses on adolescents aged 10-19, addressing everything from nutrition and substance abuse to mental health.
Fitness: More Than Just a Game
The push for physical fitness is about instilling a culture of activity from a young age. Initiatives like the Fit India Movement encourage schools and communities to prioritize physical well-being. This involves promoting activities like yoga and meditation, which are integrated into the school health curriculum to support both physical and mental resilience. The School Health and Wellness Programme mandates weekly hour-long sessions dedicated to joyful learning about health, which includes physical activity. By making fitness a regular and engaging part of the school week, the goal is to build habits that last a lifetime and counter the rise of sedentary lifestyles.
Nutrition: Nourishing the Next Generation
Good nutrition is critical, especially with India facing the triple threat of undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and rising obesity among young people. The 'Eat Right India' movement, spearheaded by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), is a key driver of this effort. Its 'Eat Right School' programme provides resources and encourages schools to adopt curricula focused on healthy eating and food safety. A significant regulation under this initiative bans the sale and advertisement of foods high in fat, salt, and sugar (junk food) in and around a 50-metre radius of school campuses. These efforts are supported by awareness campaigns like “Aaj Se Thoda Kam,” which educates citizens on reducing their intake of salt, sugar, and fat. The Weekly Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation (WIFS) programme also continues to be a vital intervention to combat high rates of anaemia among adolescents.
Screening: The Power of Early Detection
Regular health screenings in schools are a proactive measure to catch potential issues early. The School Health Programme, linked with Ayushman Bharat, facilitates the screening, detection, and early treatment of diseases and deficiencies in children and adolescents. This includes checks for malnutrition and anaemia, which remain significant challenges. Screenings also cover developmental delays and mental health concerns. Programmes like the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) are tasked with screening children for various health conditions. Recently, initiatives such as the “My Health, My Pride” campaign have conducted mass health check-ups and BMI assessments for thousands of young people, providing them with crucial insights into their health status.
Healthy Habits: Building a Foundation for Life
The focus on wellness extends beyond the physical to encompass mental and social well-being. The School Health and Wellness Programme's curriculum covers topics like emotional wellbeing, interpersonal relationships, gender equality, and the safe use of the internet. Mental health is a growing priority, with initiatives like 'Manodarpan' providing psychosocial support to students, teachers, and parents. Furthermore, there is a strong emphasis on preventing substance abuse through awareness campaigns like the Nasha Mukt Yuva Abhiyan. These programmes aim to equip young people with the life skills needed to make informed and responsible decisions about their health, fostering resilience and promoting a holistic sense of well-being that will support them into adulthood.
