The AI Hiring Boom Is Real
The numbers paint a clear picture of opportunity. Recent reports show that AI is a significant net job creator in India. A Nomura report analyzing employment cases through August 2026 found that for every job lost or impacted by AI, 2.6 new AI-related
jobs were created. This has resulted in over 83,000 new AI-related hires against approximately 32,000 roles lost to the technology. LinkedIn's CEO also recently highlighted the surge, noting that AI engineering jobs in India are growing at a staggering 51% year-on-year. This demand is projected to continue, with a NASSCOM report estimating that India's AI talent pool will need to grow from around 650,000 professionals to over 1.25 million by 2027 to meet demand. The roles in highest demand include Machine Learning Engineers, Generative AI Developers, and AI Product Managers, often commanding significant salary premiums over traditional tech jobs.
A Pervasive Crisis of Confidence
Despite the hiring frenzy, a deep sense of anxiety is palpable among Indian professionals. A July 2026 survey of over 1,500 workers by the anonymous platform Blind delivered a startling finding: 66% of employees working in AI and machine learning roles expect a layoff in their team within the next six months. This suggests that even those building the technology feel vulnerable. This level of concern among AI/ML specialists is nearly as high as that in sales and marketing (68%), functions widely seen as being at high risk of disruption. The insecurity isn't just about direct replacement; it's about a fundamental shift. A Goldman Sachs report noted that while up to 12% of India's non-agricultural workforce faces substitution risk from Gen-AI, a much larger portion—nearly half—will see their jobs complemented and changed by it. This widespread transformation, even if not outright replacement, is a major source of the prevailing uncertainty.
The Great Skill Divide
So, how can hiring be surging while insecurity is rampant? The answer lies in the widening gap between the skills companies need and the skills the workforce currently possesses. The jobs being created are not for the same people whose roles are being automated. The Nomura report described India as “ground zero” for understanding this dynamic, where support teams are being replaced by chatbots while companies desperately seek graduates with specialized AI skills. This creates a two-tier labour market. One tier is for those with 'AI-native' talent—professionals who can build, manage, and ethically deploy AI systems. A recent NASSCOM report cautioned that while over 90% of young tech professionals use AI tools, only 23% qualify as truly 'AI-native,' possessing the deep technical and critical thinking skills required. The other tier consists of workers whose routine tasks are being automated, leading to job displacement or a need for urgent reskilling.
Upskilling Is the Only Bridge
The clear path through this complex landscape is continuous learning and adaptation. The challenge is immense; one NASSCOM report highlighted that 65% of employees either lack confidence or have no exposure to AI tools, and formal company-led skilling initiatives are often missing. To close this gap, both individuals and organisations must act. For professionals, the focus must shift to acquiring skills in data literacy, machine learning, prompt engineering, and, crucially, AI ethics and responsible use. For companies, success depends on redesigning talent models, not just deploying new tools. This involves investing in robust mentorship and reskilling programs that go beyond basic tool usage to foster genuine engineering judgment and independent problem-solving. The goal is to cultivate a workforce that doesn't just use AI, but can collaborate with it effectively to drive innovation.
