The applications of this technology are moving from harmless fun to serious crime. The most common and emotionally manipulative tactic is the 'family emergency' scam. Criminals use a cloned voice to call a parent or grandparent, posing as a child or grandchild in deep trouble—claiming they've been in an accident, arrested, or kidnapped and need money wired immediately. The familiarity of the voice short-circuits a person's natural skepticism. One victim in the US lost $15,000 after receiving a sobbing call from someone she believed was her daughter, who claimed to have caused a car accident. Beyond personal scams, businesses are also prime targets. Scammers have impersonated CEOs, instructing finance departments to make urgent and confidential fund transfers, leading to millions in losses. According to the FBI, losses from AI-related scams in the US exceeded $893 million in 2025 alone.
The Cracks in Voice Biometrics
For years, banks and other institutions have promoted voice biometrics—using your voiceprint as a password—as a secure and convenient authentication method. However, the rise of deepfake audio has exposed its significant vulnerabilities. Unlike facial recognition, which can incorporate 'liveness detection' to check for a real person, voice systems struggle to distinguish between a live human and a high-quality synthetic recording. Furthermore, voice authentication can be unreliable due to background noise, microphone quality, or even a person's emotional state or health. How to Build a Better Digital Lock
Protecting yourself in this new environment requires a healthy dose of skepticism and new security habits. The first rule is to be suspicious of urgency. Scammers create high-pressure situations to prevent you from thinking clearly. If you receive an unexpected and urgent call requesting money or sensitive information, hang up. Then, verify the person's story by calling them back on a known, trusted number or by contacting another family member. For an extra layer of security, some families are adopting a 'safe word'—a unique word or phrase that only they would know, which can be used to verify identity during a suspicious call. On a broader level, never share passwords or verification codes over the phone. Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on all your important accounts. This means that even if a scammer gets past one security layer (like your voice or password), they will be stopped by another, such as a code sent to your phone.
