The Familiar Feeling of September Heat
Traditionally, 'September heat' marks the transition period as the southwest monsoon begins its withdrawal. As rainfall decreases, clear skies allow for more direct solar radiation. However, the ground is still saturated with moisture from months of rain.
This combination of intense sun and high humidity creates a notoriously uncomfortable, sauna-like heat. The moisture in the air traps warmth, making temperatures feel much higher than they actually are and preventing nights from cooling down effectively. For generations, this was a predictable, if unpleasant, part of the annual weather cycle.
But the Monsoon Itself Is Changing
The predictable rhythm of the Indian monsoon is becoming a thing of the past. Scientific evidence overwhelmingly shows that climate change is making the monsoon stronger, yet more erratic. Overall rainfall may be increasing, but its delivery is changing dramatically. Instead of consistent, widespread showers over several months, the monsoon is now often characterized by long dry spells punctuated by sudden, intense bursts of extreme rainfall. Studies show that for every degree Celsius of warming, monsoon rainfall is likely to increase by about 5%, intensifying the entire system. This volatility is the main driver behind why September now feels so different.
The Problem of a Delayed Withdrawal
A key change is the monsoon's delayed departure. Historically, the withdrawal would begin from northwest India around the start of September. In recent years, this process has been pushed back, sometimes by weeks. This delay means that monsoon conditions, particularly high humidity, linger longer into the month. When a 'break' in the monsoon occurs—a period of little to no rain—during this delayed phase, it creates the perfect storm for intense heat. You have the strong September sun, a lack of cooling rain, and an atmosphere still heavy with moisture from a monsoon that refuses to leave.
Longer Dry Spells Mean More Heating
The new monsoon pattern of intense rain followed by extended dry breaks is a major factor. During these prolonged dry periods, there is no cloud cover to block the sun. The land absorbs solar radiation for days on end, causing surface temperatures to rise steadily. While the total rainfall for the season might look normal on paper, these intermittent droughts create heatwave-like conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has noted that weak monsoon conditions and rainfall deficits are directly linked to record-high temperatures. A dry spell in August or early September essentially pre-heats the subcontinent just before the season's final phase.
The Dual Threat: Extreme Rain and Humid Heat
This creates what some scientists call a 'dual threat'. Communities are now being hit by two different extremes within the same season: destructive, flood-inducing rainfall and dangerous, humid heat waves during the breaks. The punishing rhythm of a few days of deluge followed by a week or more of oppressive heat is becoming the new standard. The heat is no longer just a pre-monsoon or post-monsoon issue; it's an ever-present threat during the dry spells that now define the monsoon itself. This pattern challenges agriculture, strains water resources, and poses significant health risks from humid heat, which can be a 'silent killer' by preventing the body from cooling itself.
