The Strategic Route and Key Stoppages
The Vande Bharat Express service to Srinagar operates on the landmark Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), a 272-km engineering marvel. This all-weather line was built to provide reliable connectivity through the challenging Himalayan terrain.
The direct services between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar began in the first half of 2026, with the inaugural run flagged off on April 30 and commercial services starting May 2. The route features several key stations, including Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Reasi, and Banihal. In a recent update from August 2026, the Railway Ministry approved a stop at Udhampur (Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan station) for a new, third Vande Bharat train on this corridor, responding to popular demand. This new service will provide another travel option and increase capacity on the high-demand route.
Journey Time: A Major Leap Forward
One of the most significant advantages of the Vande Bharat service is the drastic reduction in travel time. The train journey between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar is completed in under five hours, with some services taking approximately four hours and 50 minutes. This is a massive improvement over the 8-11 hour journey by road on the often-congested NH-44. The service's efficiency is set to improve further. In August 2026, the maximum permissible speed on the Katra-Banihal section was increased to 100 kmph after successful trials, including high-speed runs over the iconic Chenab Bridge. This enhancement promises even quicker and more comfortable journeys for passengers.
Passenger Comfort and Onboard Amenities
The Vande Bharat Express is known for its modern, passenger-friendly features. The trains are fully air-conditioned and offer two classes of travel: AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC). Passengers in Executive Class can enjoy rotating seats, offering panoramic views of the stunning landscape, which includes traversing the world's highest railway arch bridge, the Chenab Bridge. The trains are specially designed for the region's climate, with winterisation technology and advanced heating systems to ensure smooth operations even in sub-zero temperatures. Onboard amenities include a GPS-based passenger information system, bio-vacuum toilets, Wi-Fi, and catering services, ensuring a comfortable and convenient travel experience.
Schedules and Fares
Currently, two pairs of Vande Bharat trains operate daily services between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar. The morning service (26401) departs Jammu Tawi at 6:20 AM, arriving in Srinagar at 11:10 AM. An afternoon service (26403) leaves Jammu at 1:20 PM and reaches Srinagar at 6:00 PM. Return journeys from Srinagar are scheduled for 8:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Fares for the AC Chair Car generally range from ₹715 to ₹880, while the Executive Chair Car costs between ₹1,320 and ₹1,515, inclusive of catering. These prices provide an affordable alternative to air travel and a far more comfortable option than road transport. A third train service (26407/26408) has been approved and is expected to fill a late-morning departure slot from Jammu.
A Game-Changer for Kashmir
The introduction of direct, all-weather rail connectivity is more than just a convenience; it's a transformative development for the region. The service has been an immediate success, serving tens of thousands of passengers within its first few weeks of operation. The Vande Bharat trains are expected to provide a major boost to tourism, local trade, and the overall economy by making the Kashmir Valley more accessible than ever before. For tourists, pilgrims, business travellers, and locals alike, the train offers a safe, reliable, and scenic way to journey into what is often called 'Paradise on Earth'. The completion of the USBRL project and the launch of these modern train services fulfill a long-standing national goal of integrating the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India's railway network.
