The sacred city of Ayodhya is buzzing with an ethereal energy as it prepares for Deepotsav 2026. This year's celebration, marking the festival of lights, promises to be the grandest yet, aiming to recreate the legendary splendour of Treta Yuga.
An Ocean of Light
The centrepiece
of Deepotsav is the breathtaking spectacle of millions of earthen lamps, or diyas, illuminating the city. For 2026, the administration is preparing to light an astonishing number of diyas along the ghats of the Saryu river, with targets ranging from 30 to 33 lakh (3 to 3.3 million). This massive undertaking is not just a visual marvel but an attempt to surpass previous world records, turning the riverfront into a shimmering ocean of light. The effort begins long before the festival, with potter families in surrounding villages working tirelessly to meet the massive demand for lamps, with some workshops receiving orders for lakhs of diyas. Thousands of volunteers will meticulously arrange these lamps along 56 ghats, ensuring every corner of Ram Ki Paidi glows with devotion.
A Historic Celebration at Ram's Abode
This Deepotsav holds unparalleled significance as it is one of the first major Diwali celebrations since the historic consecration of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple. For devotees and the city's seer community, it's a moment that has been awaited for generations, described as the return of Lord Ram to his rightful abode after a 500-year wait. The sentiment across Ayodhya is one of profound joy and spiritual fulfilment, with many feeling that the divine atmosphere of Treta Yuga has been restored. The celebrations will see the newly constructed temple itself become a focal point, adorned with special floral decorations and illuminated by eco-friendly lamps designed to prevent soot and preserve the pristine structure.
More Than Just Lights
While the diyas are the main attraction, Deepotsav is a multi-day cultural extravaganza. The festivities, scheduled around November 7th, include a grand procession of vibrant tableaus depicting scenes from the Ramayana. These processions are complemented by spectacular drone and laser shows that bring the epic tale to life in the night sky. Cultural troupes, including international performers, will present Ramlila enactments and other traditional arts. A major highlight is the grand Saryu Aarti, a deeply moving ceremony where thousands of priests and devotees will participate in worship on the riverbank at dusk. To make the event accessible, the Uttar Pradesh government has also organised nationwide competitions and special tourist packages.
A City Transformed
Preparing for an event of this magnitude requires a monumental civic effort. Ayodhya is undergoing a massive transformation to welcome the millions of expected visitors. Key roads like the Ram Path are being decorated with elaborate floral arrangements and decorative lighting. An extensive cleanliness drive is in place, with nearly 800 sanitation workers and dozens of waste-management vehicles tasked to keep the city pristine. To ensure comfort for the vast crowds, hundreds of bio-toilets, mobile toilets, and water kiosks are being installed at strategic locations throughout the city. These round-the-clock preparations aim to provide every devotee and tourist with a safe, hygienic, and unforgettable experience in the revitalised holy city.
