Why the Major Disruption?
The large-scale disruption is due to a significant upgrade project at the Chandigarh railway station. The Ambala Division of Northern Railway is undertaking this work to erect a new 'through-roof' structure and dismantle the old foot-over-bridge girders
as part of a major station redevelopment initiative. This essential work cannot be completed while the station is fully operational, necessitating a phased block of railway lines and platforms for 36 days. The work is divided into three 12-day phases: September 10-21, September 22-October 3, and October 4-15, with different sets of lines being affected in each phase.
The '54 Services' Explained
While the headline mentions 54 services, the impact is a mix of cancellations, short-terminations, and diversions. According to reports, 54 train trips will be short-terminated or short-originated at Ambala Cantt instead of Chandigarh. This means for these services, the journey will either end at Ambala or begin from there, forcing passengers to arrange their own travel for the Ambala-Chandigarh leg. This primarily affects trains like the Ajmer-Chandigarh Garib Rath (12983/12984) and the Udaipur-Chandigarh Express (20989/20990) on specific dates. In addition to these, at least 12 other train services will be fully cancelled for the entire duration, resulting in a total of 442 cancelled individual trips.
Key Cancelled and Short-Terminated Trains
A dozen train services are slated for complete cancellation throughout the block period. This includes several popular routes such as the Chandigarh-Amritsar-Chandigarh Express and the Chandigarh-Firozpur-Chandigarh Express. Passenger services on the Ambala-Kalka and Kalka-Delhi routes are also among those cancelled. For many other trains, Ambala Cantt will become the temporary hub. Services like the Ramnagar-Chandigarh Express and the Ajmer-Chandigarh Garib Rath will terminate at or depart from Ambala on designated days instead of Chandigarh. Passengers holding tickets for these trains will need to deboard at Ambala and find alternative transport to Chandigarh, or travel from their city to Ambala to board.
Platform Changes and Diversions
Beyond cancellations, passengers must also be vigilant about platform changes. Across the three phases, a total of 76 trains will berth at different platforms than usual. Even premium services like the Shatabdi Express and Vande Bharat trains will be affected by these platform shuffles at various stages. For instance, from October 4 to 15, the New Delhi-Kalka Shatabdi (12011) will shift from its usual Platform 1 to Platform 5. To ease the inconvenience, railways have also added temporary stops at Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali) for eight long-distance trains, including the Amritsar-Dehradun Express. A couple of services, like the Lalkuan-Amritsar Superfast Express, will be diverted entirely on certain dates, skipping Chandigarh altogether.

The most crucial step is to verify your train's status before leaving for the station.
