The Anguished Artist: Jordan and Ved
For a significant phase of his career, Ranbir Kapoor became the face of the tortured artist, a man undone by his own heart. This era was defined by two landmark Imtiaz Ali films: Rockstar (2011) and Tamasha (2015). In Rockstar, he was Janardhan Jakhar,
a naive college student who transforms into the self-destructive musician Jordan. Believing that great art comes only from great pain, he chases heartbreak and finds it, but the ensuing fame and rage consume him entirely. Jordan was a character of raw, exposed nerves, driven by a love that turns into a destructive obsession. Kapoor’s performance was lauded for its raw emotional intensity, capturing the journey from a hopeful musician to a celebrated but broken man. In Tamasha, the conflict was more internal. Kapoor played Ved, a man living a double life. In the real world, he is a monotonous product manager, but his true self is a passionate storyteller. The film explores this split, as Ved struggles to reconcile the life society expects of him with the creative, free-spirited person he truly is. Both Jordan and Ved are characters in turmoil, battling societal norms and their inner demons. They cemented Kapoor’s reputation as an actor capable of portraying deep, complex, and vulnerable masculinity.
The Brutal Break: Ranvijay Singh
If Jordan and Ved were defined by internalized pain, Ranvijay Singh of Animal (2023) was the explosive opposite. This role marked a radical departure from Kapoor's established image, swapping the sensitive loverboy for a violent, alpha-male anti-hero. Ranvijay is driven by an obsessive need for his emotionally distant father's approval. When his father is attacked, he unleashes a wave of brutal vengeance that is both shocking and uncompromising. The character was deeply polarizing, praised for its raw power but heavily criticized for its perceived glorification of toxic masculinity. For the role, Kapoor underwent a significant physical transformation, bulking up to embody the character's aggression. Ranvijay’s actions are extreme, from threatening people with guns to engaging in brutal, bloody combat. He is manipulative, short-tempered, and unapologetically violent, a character with shades of grey that lean heavily into darkness. It was a high-risk role that paid off commercially, proving Kapoor's willingness to step far outside his comfort zone to explore the unsettling parts of the human psyche.
The Path to Divinity: Portraying Lord Ram
The next chapter in Kapoor’s career represents arguably his greatest challenge and most profound shift yet: portraying Lord Ram in Nitesh Tiwari's highly anticipated epic, Ramayana. This role demands a complete reversal from the chaos and rage of Ranvijay. Lord Ram is the embodiment of Maryada Purushottam—the perfect man, defined by righteousness, calm, and divine grace. The transformation required is not just physical but spiritual. Reports indicate Kapoor has committed deeply to the part, undertaking extensive preparation that goes far beyond a typical film role. His training has included years of yoga and meditation, extensive reading of scriptures, consulting with scholars, and specialized archery and vocal training to embody the deity's essence. He reportedly even adopted a vegetarian diet and abstained from alcohol to align himself with the purity of the character. This shift from playing a symbol of modern-day fury in Animal to a revered figure of peace and dharma is a testament to his ambition as an actor. It moves him from portraying a man who breaks all rules to one who defines them.
