The Game-Changer: UPI on Credit Cards
For years, UPI payments were a simple bank-to-bank transfer, offering convenience but zero rewards. Credit cards, on the other hand, offered points and miles but couldn't be used for small, everyday QR code payments. The landscape shifted when the Reserve
Bank of India enabled RuPay credit cards to be linked with UPI platforms. This single move unlocked the potential to earn rewards on a massive volume of transactions that were previously unrewarded. Now, apps like GPay, PhonePe, and Paytm allow you to link your RuPay credit card, making it your primary payment source for scanning QR codes. Instead of your savings account being debited, the expense is charged to your credit card, allowing you to accumulate reward points on nearly every purchase.
Step 1: Choose the Right Credit Card
Not all credit cards are created equal in the UPI rewards game. The key is to find a RuPay card with a strong reward structure for UPI spends and favourable redemption options for travel. Look for two main types: travel-focused cards and high-value reward cards. Cards like the Tata Neu Infinity HDFC Bank Credit Card offer a flat 1.5% back in NeuCoins on UPI spends, which is a strong, consistent return. Others, like the Scapia Federal Bank Card, are built for travel lovers, offering 'Scapia Coins' on UPI spends that can be redeemed for flights and hotels directly within their app. Airline co-branded cards from Vistara, Air India, or others can also be linked if they have a RuPay variant, funnelling your points directly into a frequent flyer program. Before choosing, analyse your own spending and travel preferences. A card that aligns with your favourite airline or hotel chain will often provide the most value.
Step 2: The Simple Setup
Once you have the right card, linking it to your UPI app is a straightforward process. The steps are broadly similar across all major UPI applications like PhonePe, Google Pay, or Paytm. First, open your preferred UPI app and look for an option like 'Add Credit Card' or 'Link RuPay Credit Card'. The app will then display a list of supported banks. Select your card issuer, and the app will automatically detect any eligible RuPay credit cards linked to your mobile number. After you confirm and select the card, you'll be prompted to set a UPI PIN for it, just as you did for your bank account. Once the PIN is set, your credit card will appear as a payment option whenever you scan a merchant QR code. You can then select it instead of your bank account to complete the transaction.
Step 3: A Smart Spending Strategy
The goal is to maximise rewards without altering your spending habits or accumulating debt. Use your UPI-linked credit card for all your regular expenses—from groceries and dining to utility bills and online shopping. However, be aware that some cards exclude categories like wallet loads, rent payments, or fuel, so always check the terms. Some cards offer accelerated rewards on specific categories, like HDFC's card offering 3% CashPoints on groceries and dining. The key is consistency. A small 1.5% reward might not seem like much on a single transaction, but when applied to thousands of rupees in monthly spending, it accumulates quickly. For example, spending ₹20,000 a month on UPI could yield rewards worth over ₹3,600 in a year with a card like the Tata Neu Infinity.
Step 4: The Payoff – Points to Vouchers
This is where your diligence pays off. Accumulating points is only half the battle; redeeming them effectively is what truly matters. The process typically involves logging into your credit card's online portal or app. Here, you'll find a rewards section with options for redemption. For travel, you have two primary paths. The first is booking flights or hotels directly through the bank's own travel portal (like HDFC SmartBuy), where your points can be used to pay for the ticket. The second, and often more valuable method, is transferring your points to an airline or hotel partner. Premium cards like the HDFC Diners Club Black or Axis Atlas have partnerships with programs like Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, British Airways Avios, and Marriott Bonvoy. Transferring your points to these programs and booking an 'award ticket' can yield a much higher value per point than direct redemption, especially for business class travel. This is how savvy spenders turn everyday points into luxury travel experiences.
