How Humidity Changes Your Skin
The primary challenge during the monsoon is the high humidity. This excess moisture in the air signals your skin to produce more sebum, or oil. This can leave your face feeling greasy and lead to clogged pores, which is a direct cause of acne and breakouts.
Furthermore, the combination of sweat, heat, and constant dampness creates an ideal breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. This increases the risk of skin issues like folliculitis, ringworm, and other itchy rashes, making it crucial to adapt your skincare to this unique environment.
Step 1: Focus on Gentle, Thorough Cleansing
Cleansing becomes your first line of defence. To combat the extra oil and grime, wash your face twice daily with a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser. Over-washing can strip the skin of its natural oils, which can paradoxically cause it to produce even more oil. Look for foaming cleansers or those containing salicylic acid, a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that cleans deep inside the pores to remove trapped oil and dead skin cells, helping to prevent acne. For those who wear makeup or feel particularly grimy, a double cleanse in the evening—starting with an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based one—can be highly effective.
Step 2: Exfoliate, But Don't Overdo It
With the increased buildup of oil and dead skin cells, exfoliation is key to keeping pores clear and skin looking bright. However, it's important to be gentle. Harsh physical scrubs can cause micro-tears and irritation, especially when the skin's barrier is already compromised by humidity. Instead, opt for a mild chemical exfoliant with AHAs (like glycolic acid) or BHAs (like salicylic acid) once or twice a week. This will help slough away dead cells and improve skin texture without causing damage.
Step 3: Switch to a Lightweight Moisturiser
It’s a common myth that oily or damp skin doesn't need moisturiser. In reality, all skin types need hydration, even in the monsoon. Skipping moisturiser can dehydrate your skin, prompting it to produce more oil to compensate. The trick is to swap heavy creams for lightweight, non-comedogenic (pore-clogging) formulas. Gel-based or water-based moisturisers are ideal. Look for products containing hyaluronic acid, which hydrates the skin by attracting and holding onto water, leaving it plump and hydrated without a greasy feel.
Step 4: Never Skip Sunscreen
Do not be fooled by the cloudy skies; UV rays are still a threat. Clouds do not block harmful UVA and UVB radiation, and up to 80% of the sun's rays can still penetrate them. UVA rays, responsible for premature ageing and pigmentation, are present year-round. Furthermore, wet surfaces like roads and puddles can reflect UV rays, increasing your exposure. To protect your skin, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every single day. For humid weather, choose a lightweight, gel-based, or matte-finish formula that won’t feel sticky.
Step 5: Add Targeted Treatments
The monsoon is a great time to incorporate targeted treatments into your routine. Serums containing niacinamide can help regulate oil production, minimise the appearance of pores, and soothe irritation. An antioxidant serum with Vitamin C is another excellent addition to brighten dull skin and protect it from environmental damage. For a weekly deep clean, consider using a clay mask. Ingredients like kaolin or bentonite clay are excellent for absorbing excess oil and drawing impurities out of the pores, helping to keep breakouts at bay.
