Malaysia: A Fusion of Culture and Modernity
Malaysia has extended its visa-free policy for Indian citizens through the end of 2026, offering a 30-day stay for tourism. This means you can explore this diverse Southeast Asian gem without the usual visa application process. While entry is visa-free,
travellers must complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online within three days before arriving. Malaysia is a country of stunning contrasts. In Kuala Lumpur, the futuristic Petronas Towers dominate the skyline, while the nearby Batu Caves offer a glimpse into the nation's rich Hindu heritage. The street food scene is legendary, offering a delicious mix of Malay, Chinese, and Indian flavours. Beyond the capital, you can unwind on the idyllic beaches of Langkawi, trek through ancient rainforests in Taman Negara, or explore the colonial architecture of Penang. The best time to visit the western part of the country, including Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi, is generally between December and April.
Sri Lanka: The Resplendent Emerald Isle
Our island neighbour, Sri Lanka, continues to welcome Indian tourists with open arms. The country has extended its free visa program for Indians, which was first introduced as a pilot in late 2023. This policy waives the fee for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), though applying for the ETA online before you travel is still required for a smooth immigration experience. The free ETA allows for a 30-day stay with a double-entry facility. Sri Lanka is a land of incredible diversity packed into a small area. You can spend your time exploring ancient wonders like the rock fortress of Sigiriya, riding the famously scenic train through the lush, green tea plantations of Ella and Nuwara Eliya, or searching for leopards in Yala National Park. The southern coast is lined with golden-sand beaches perfect for surfing and relaxation, from Mirissa to Unawatuna. For the best weather on the south and west coasts and in the hill country, plan your visit between December and April.
Kenya: The Ultimate Safari Destination
For those dreaming of an African safari, Kenya has made visiting significantly easier. Since the start of 2024, the country has become a visa-free destination for all global travellers, including Indians. Instead of a traditional visa, visitors now need to apply online for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before their trip. This eTA is typically valid for a stay of up to 90 days. Kenya is synonymous with wildlife. Its national parks are world-renowned, most notably the Maasai Mara National Reserve. This is where you can witness the Great Migration, one of nature's most spectacular events, as millions of wildebeest and zebra cross the plains. Beyond the Mara, you can see vast elephant herds in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro at Amboseli National Park. Kenya also offers a vibrant culture, from the cosmopolitan energy of Nairobi to the rich traditions of the Maasai people. The prime time for a safari and witnessing the migration is during the dry season, from late June to October.
