To understand why humidity is such a game-changer, we first need to look at how your body keeps itself cool. Think of it as having a highly efficient, personal air conditioner. When your internal temperature rises during exercise, your brain sends a signal
to your sweat glands. These glands release sweat onto your skin. The magic happens when this sweat evaporates, turning from a liquid to a gas. This process, known as evaporative cooling, uses heat energy from your body, effectively lowering your skin and core temperature to keep you from overheating. It's an incredibly effective system that allows us to perform strenuous activities without our internal temperature rising to dangerous levels.
How Humidity Hijacks Your Workout
Humidity is the amount of water vapour in the air. When humidity is high, the air is already saturated with moisture. This is where the problem starts. For your sweat to cool you down, it needs to evaporate. But if the air is already full of water, there’s nowhere for your sweat to go. Instead of evaporating and taking heat with it, the sweat simply drips off your skin, providing very little cooling effect. Your body's primary cooling mechanism is effectively disabled. Your internal temperature continues to rise, and your body has to work much harder to try and regulate it. This extra effort is why a workout on a humid day feels significantly more difficult than the same workout in dry conditions.
The Invisible Strain on Your Body
When your body can't cool itself efficiently, a cascade of physiological responses occurs. Your heart has to work harder, pumping more blood to the skin's surface in an attempt to release heat. This increased cardiovascular strain means a higher heart rate, even at a lower exercise intensity. With more blood being diverted to the skin, less oxygen-rich blood is available for your working muscles, causing them to fatigue much faster. This leads to a higher perceived effort—that feeling that you are working much harder than you actually are. This combination of an overheating core, a strained heart, and tired muscles is what makes exercising in humidity so challenging.
Tips for Exercising in Humid Weather
You don't have to hang up your running shoes when the air gets thick. Adapting your routine can help you continue training safely and effectively. Start by checking the 'feels like' temperature or the dew point, which can give you a better sense of the conditions than the temperature alone. Hydration is crucial; drink plenty of water before, during, and after your workout to replace the fluids you lose. Try to schedule your exercise for the coolest parts of the day, like the early morning or late evening, avoiding the peak heat between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Opt for shaded trails or consider an indoor workout on particularly oppressive days. Most importantly, listen to your body. Reduce the intensity or duration of your workout and don't be afraid to take extra breaks. Finally, wear light-coloured, loose-fitting, and moisture-wicking clothing to help what little evaporation is possible.
Know the Warning Signs
Pushing too hard in humid conditions can lead to serious heat-related illnesses. It's vital to recognise the early warning signs. Heat exhaustion often presents with symptoms like heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, and muscle cramps. If you experience these, you should immediately stop exercising, move to a cool place, and drink fluids. Heat exhaustion can progress to heatstroke, which is a medical emergency. The signs of heatstroke include a very high body temperature, hot skin that may not be sweating, a rapid pulse, confusion, slurred speech, and loss of consciousness. If you suspect someone has heatstroke, call for emergency medical help immediately.
