The journey between Bengaluru and Goa, a favourite for many travellers, is set to become faster. A new Vande Bharat Express train service has been approved, promising to cover the distance in approximately 13 hours.
A New Era of Rail Connectivity
The Ministry of Railways has officially
approved the introduction of the Yesvantpur-Madgaon Vande Bharat Express. This new semi-high-speed train aims to significantly enhance the rail connectivity between Karnataka's tech hub and India's favourite coastal destination. The service is expected to be a welcome development for both tourists and regular commuters, offering a faster and more comfortable travel option. The introduction of this train means the existing Madgaon-Mangaluru Central Vande Bharat Express will be discontinued.
Route and Key Stoppages
The train will operate via Mangaluru Junction, traversing a scenic path that includes the stunning Western Ghats. The route is designed to provide passengers with panoramic views of lush hills and dense forests, particularly along the Sakleshpur to Subrahmanya Road stretch. The train will make 12 commercial stops between Yesvantpur (Bengaluru) and Madgaon (Goa). The key stations on the route include Shravanabelagola, Hassan, Sakleshpur, Mangaluru Junction, Udupi, Kundapura, Murdeshwar, Gokarna Road, and Karwar, before reaching its final destination.
Timings and Schedule Details
The Yesvantpur-Madgaon service will operate under train numbers 26655 and 26656. Train 26655, travelling from Yesvantpur to Madgaon, is scheduled to depart at 7:35 AM and arrive at 8:55 PM, making the journey approximately 13 hours and 20 minutes long. This service will run six days a week, with no service on Wednesdays. For the return journey, train 26656 will leave Madgaon at 8:20 AM and reach Yesvantpur at 9:15 PM, with a slightly shorter travel time of 12 hours and 55 minutes. This service will also run six days a week, excluding Thursdays.
Alternative: The Classic Road Trip
For those who prefer the freedom of the open road, the Bengaluru to Goa drive remains a popular choice, typically taking 10 to 12 hours depending on the route and breaks. The most common and fastest route is via NH48, passing through Tumkur, Chitradurga, and Hubli. This route is mostly a four-to-six-lane highway, making for a smooth journey. Other scenic options include the coastal route via Mangalore on NH66, which is longer but offers beautiful views of the Arabian Sea. Travellers often choose different ghat sections like Chorla, Anmod, or Amboli to descend into Goa, each offering a unique driving experience and landscape. Road conditions can vary, especially in the ghats and on state highways connecting from the main national highway, so it's wise to check for recent updates before starting.
Planning Your Road Journey
An early start, typically between 4:30 AM and 6:00 AM, is recommended to avoid Bengaluru's city traffic and cover a significant distance in daylight. The route along NH48 is well-serviced with numerous restaurants and fuel stations, particularly around major towns like Davangere and Hubli, which are popular for meal breaks. Davangere is famous for its 'Benne Dosa', making it a classic culinary stop. Depending on whether your destination is in North or South Goa, you can choose to drive via Belgaum (for the Chorla Ghat) or turn off towards Karwar (for South Goa destinations). Total driving time, without long stops, ranges from 9 to 12 hours.
