The Current Visa Rule: 30 Days Visa-Free
As of mid-July 2026, the Thai government has confirmed its policy for Indian tourists. Indian passport holders are eligible for visa-free entry into Thailand for a period of up to 30 days. This decision came after a period of uncertainty where a previous
60-day visa-free stay was reviewed and subsequently revised. The government settled on the 30-day period to align with the typical travel duration of Indian tourists while still boosting its vital tourism sector, which saw a decline in Indian arrivals during the period of policy confusion. This new rule replaces both the former 60-day visa waiver and the older visa-on-arrival system for Indians.
Essential Documents You Cannot Forget
While you don't need to apply for a visa beforehand, arriving unprepared can ruin your trip. Immigration officials in Thailand will require you to present several key documents. First, your passport must have at least six months of validity from your date of arrival. You must also carry proof of a confirmed return or onward flight ticket to show you intend to leave Thailand within the 30-day period. Furthermore, be prepared to show proof of accommodation, such as hotel bookings for your stay. It is also mandatory for all foreign travellers to fill out the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before entry.
Proof of Funds: The Cash Requirement
One of the most critical and often overlooked requirements is proof of sufficient funds. Indian travellers may be asked by immigration officers to show they have enough money for their stay. The generally stipulated amount is around 20,000 Thai Baht per person. While the rule has been in place for visa-on-arrival, it is being more consistently mentioned with the new visa-free structure. It is highly advisable to carry this amount, preferably in cash, as officials may conduct random checks. Having a credit card or bank statement might also be helpful, but carrying the specified cash amount is the safest way to ensure a smooth entry.
What About Longer Stays? Exploring Other Options
If a 30-day trip isn't long enough, you have other visa options to explore, though they require more advance planning. For a stay of up to 60 days, you can apply for a standard Single-Entry Tourist Visa from a Thai embassy or consulate in India before you travel. This can be extended for an additional 30 days within Thailand. For those considering a much longer visit, such as digital nomads or remote workers, Thailand has also introduced the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV). This is a five-year, multiple-entry visa that allows for a stay of up to 180 days per entry. However, the DTV has specific eligibility criteria and financial requirements, including proof of funds of at least 500,000 THB.
Planning Your 30-Day Thai Adventure
A 30-day window offers a fantastic opportunity to experience a diverse slice of Thailand without feeling rushed. You could spend a week exploring the bustling streets, temples, and markets of Bangkok before flying south to the islands. Spend ten days island-hopping between Phuket, Krabi, and the Phi Phi islands for stunning beaches and world-class diving. Then, fly north to Chiang Mai for a final week to experience a different side of Thai culture, with its lush mountains, ethical elephant sanctuaries, and renowned cooking classes. This timeframe allows for a mix of relaxation and exploration, covering multiple regions of the country at a comfortable pace.
