For years, urban commuters in India have had a complicated relationship with ride-hailing giants like Ola and Uber. While these apps revolutionised transport, they also introduced a host of frustrations. Unexplained driver cancellations after accepting
a ride, especially during peak hours or for less desirable destinations, have become a common grievance. Then there's the issue of surge pricing, where fares can multiply without warning, turning a routine trip into an expensive affair. These problems stem from a commission-based model where platforms take a significant cut (often 20-30%) of the fare, which can lead to driver dissatisfaction and, consequently, a less reliable service for passengers. It is this environment of unpredictability that has paved the way for a new kind of service.
Enter the Cooperative Model
Cooperative taxi platforms, often supported by the government's Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), are emerging as a significant alternative. Names like Namma Yatri and the newly expanding Bharat Taxi operate on a fundamentally different principle. Instead of a corporation taking a large commission, these apps function on a zero-commission or low-fee subscription model. This means the entire fare paid by the rider goes directly to the driver. The platforms, like Bharat Taxi, are often structured as cooperatives where the drivers themselves are member-shareholders, giving them a stake in the platform's success. The stated goal is not necessarily to replace the big players but to offer a driver-centric and people-centric alternative that prioritises fair earnings and reliable service.
Reliability: The Zero-Cancellation Promise
The headline feature for many riders is the promise of improved reliability. Because drivers keep 100% of the fare, the incentive to cancel a ride in hopes of a more lucrative one is significantly reduced. Some cooperative platforms champion a no-cancellation policy. This directly tackles one of the biggest pain points for customers of incumbent apps. In contrast, cancellations on major platforms have become so frequent that some state governments have started to intervene. Maharashtra, for instance, recently introduced rules imposing penalties on drivers who cancel rides after acceptance. While the cooperative model is designed to prevent this issue at its root, its effectiveness depends on having a sufficient number of drivers available to ensure someone is always ready to take a ride.
A Head-to-Head on Pricing
The other major draw of cooperative apps is transparent and often lower pricing. By eliminating the commission, these services can offer competitive fares. More importantly, many, like Bharat Taxi, promise surge-free pricing. This means the price you see is the price you pay, regardless of demand. This predictability is a huge advantage for budget-conscious commuters. However, the legacy apps are not standing still. In response to the growing competition and driver dissatisfaction, some have experimented with their own subscription models for auto-rickshaws, where drivers pay a fixed fee to keep all their earnings. While this shows the industry is shifting, the core cooperative promise of community ownership and consistent, surge-free pricing remains its unique selling point.
The Catch: Availability and Scale
Here lies the biggest challenge for the cooperative model. While Namma Yatri has found significant success in cities like Bengaluru and Kochi, and Bharat Taxi is expanding rapidly, their footprint is still much smaller than that of Uber and Ola, which operate in over 100 cities. This means that in many locations, or even just in certain neighbourhoods, finding a cooperative cab might take longer or be impossible. The giants have a massive network of drivers, which often translates to shorter wait times and wider availability around the clock. The expansion of services like Bharat Taxi, which aims to reach 500 cities, is a direct attempt to close this gap, but for now, a rider's ability to choose a cooperative service is heavily dependent on their location.
