For educators across India and the world, the rise of generative AI has sparked an intense debate about academic integrity. The fear is that students will use tools like ChatGPT as a shortcut, submitting AI-generated essays and answers as their own work.
This concern is valid; it strikes at the heart of learning, which requires effort, critical thinking, and the development of original thought. A Look at the Safety Levers
Recognising these concerns, OpenAI has introduced parental controls for ChatGPT. These features allow a parent to link their account to their teen's (ages 13-17) and manage certain settings. Parents can activate a filter to reduce sensitive content, set 'quiet hours' to prevent late-night use, and disable features like image generation. A key option is controlling whether a teen's conversations are used to improve OpenAI's models, which is a crucial privacy setting. However, these controls are not a perfect solution. They don't allow parents to read their child's conversations, only sending a notification in limited cases of serious safety risks. Moreover, a determined teen can potentially bypass these settings by simply creating a new account with a different email address, a loophole that puts the focus back on trust and conversation.
The Real Task: Digital Mentorship
Ultimately, technical settings are just one part of the solution. Banning the tool is often ineffective, and relying solely on parental controls is insufficient.
