While electrolytes are essential, it is possible to have too much of a good thing. For most people leading a moderately active lifestyle, a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole foods provides all the electrolytes needed. Supplementing is generally only necessary for athletes, those working outdoors in extreme heat for long hours, or people experiencing significant fluid loss from vomiting or diarrhoea.
