When the rain keeps you from your usual outdoor run or park workout, the gym becomes a sanctuary. However, indoor training during the monsoon presents a unique challenge: high humidity. When you exercise in a humid environment, your sweat doesn't evaporate
as efficiently. This is your body's primary cooling mechanism, so to compensate, it works harder and often produces even more sweat. The result is a greater loss of fluids and essential minerals, known as electrolytes, including sodium, potassium, and magnesium. This increased sweat rate in a stuffy, humid gym is a key reason why you might experience more muscle fatigue and cramping during this season.
Magnesium’s Crucial Role in Muscle Function
Magnesium is a powerhouse mineral involved in over 300 biochemical reactions in the body. For anyone who is physically active, its most important jobs relate to energy production, muscle function, and nerve signalling. Think of it as a natural muscle relaxant. Inside your muscle cells, calcium is the mineral that signals a contraction, while magnesium competes for the same binding sites to signal relaxation. When magnesium levels are low, there isn't enough to counteract calcium's contracting effect, leaving muscles more susceptible to spasms, tightness, and painful cramps.
The Link Between Sweat, Magnesium, and Cramps
While exercise-related cramps can be complex, often linked to neuromuscular fatigue, significant electrolyte loss through sweat can be a major contributing factor. During an intense, sweaty workout in a humid room, your body can lose a significant amount of magnesium. If your dietary intake isn't sufficient to replenish what's lost, your levels can drop, tipping the balance and making your muscles more prone to cramping. While research specifically on magnesium for exercise-induced cramps is mixed, there's a consensus that athletes and highly active people have higher mineral requirements due to losses through sweat and increased metabolic demands. Ensuring you get enough becomes even more critical when your sweat rate is amplified by monsoon humidity.
Are You Getting Enough Magnesium?
According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the recommended daily intake of magnesium is around 340 mg for adult men and 310 mg for adult women. However, these are baseline figures for the general population. Active individuals may need more to offset losses from exercise. Common signs of potential magnesium deficiency can be subtle and often overlap with other issues, but they include muscle twitches or cramps, fatigue, weakness, and poor sleep. If you're consistently experiencing cramps despite proper hydration and warm-ups, it might be worth evaluating your diet.
How to Boost Your Magnesium Intake
The good news is that boosting your magnesium intake is straightforward through simple dietary adjustments. Prioritising food sources is always the best first step. Some of the most magnesium-rich foods are readily available in India. Focus on incorporating dark leafy greens like spinach (palak), nuts and seeds like almonds (badam) and pumpkin seeds (kaddu ke beej), and legumes such as black beans and chickpeas (chana). Whole grains, bananas, and even dark chocolate are also excellent sources. For example, just a handful of almonds provides about 80 mg of magnesium, while a cup of cooked spinach offers nearly 160 mg.
Should You Consider a Supplement?
While supplements are heavily marketed online, they aren't necessary for everyone. If you eat a varied, whole-food diet, you can likely meet your magnesium needs. However, if you are an athlete, train intensely several times a week, and suspect your diet is lacking, a supplement might be helpful. It is crucial to approach supplements with caution. Taking too much can lead to digestive issues like diarrhoea and stomach cramps. Before starting any supplement, it is always best to consult a doctor or a registered dietitian who can assess your individual needs and rule out other underlying health issues.
