When we think of heart-healthy exercise, activities like running, swimming, or cycling are usually the first to come to mind. However, a growing body of research is making a strong case for adding resistance training to the mix. A recent study highlighted
in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology has provided compelling new evidence. The study, which followed a large group of women, found that those who engaged in regular resistance training had a significantly lower risk of major cardiovascular events, including heart attacks. Specifically, women who performed at least two hours of resistance training per week saw a 20% lower risk of cardiovascular disease. The research further suggests that the benefits of lifting weights, using resistance bands, or doing bodyweight exercises are distinct from those gained through aerobic activity alone.
How Building Muscle Helps the Heart
So, how does strengthening your biceps or legs translate to a healthier heart? The mechanisms are both direct and indirect. Firstly, resistance training is excellent for improving body composition by building muscle and reducing fat, particularly visceral fat—the dangerous type that surrounds our organs and is a known risk factor for heart disease. Stronger muscles are also more efficient at taking up glucose from the blood, which helps improve insulin sensitivity and control blood sugar levels, reducing the strain on your cardiovascular system. Furthermore, this form of exercise can lead to significant reductions in resting blood pressure. As your muscles contract and relax during a workout, they help push blood through your body more efficiently, improving overall circulation and vascular function.
Beyond Blood Pressure
The benefits don't stop there. Consistent strength training has been shown to improve cholesterol profiles by increasing HDL (the “good” cholesterol) and decreasing LDL (the “bad” cholesterol). This helps keep arteries clear and reduces the risk of plaque buildup that can lead to heart attacks and strokes. Another key benefit is the reduction of chronic inflammation throughout the body, a condition linked to the development of many long-term diseases, including coronary artery disease. While not a traditional cardio workout, a well-structured resistance training session, especially one performed in a circuit style with minimal rest, can also raise your heart rate and improve your cardiovascular endurance, offering a dual benefit.
Putting It Into Practice
The good news is that you don't have to become a professional bodybuilder to reap these rewards. The American Heart Association recommends that adults incorporate moderate- to high-intensity muscle-strengthening activities into their routine at least two days per week. This can include using free weights, weight machines, resistance bands, or even your own body weight with exercises like push-ups, squats, and lunges. Research suggests that the greatest benefits come from moving from no resistance training to even modest amounts, with a sweet spot often cited between 30 to 60 minutes per week. For an effective workout, aim for one to three sets of 8 to 12 repetitions for each major muscle group, working the muscles to the point of fatigue. The key is consistency and gradual progression, slowly increasing the weight, sets, or frequency as you get stronger.
