Modernising a Critical Junction
Indian Railways has undertaken a significant project to remodel the railway yards at Bina station, under West Central Railway, and Agasod station, under North Central Railway. This large-scale effort is necessary to connect a crucial new third railway line
being built between the two locations. The work, which involves complex pre-non-interlocking and non-interlocking activities, is scheduled to take place in phases from early September to mid-October 2026. In simple terms, this means the existing track layout and signalling systems are being reconfigured and upgraded, a process that requires the temporary suspension of normal train operations to ensure safety. This overhaul is vital for modernising one of the region's busy corridors.
Short-Term Pain, Long-Term Gain
While the diversions and cancellations cause immediate inconvenience, the long-term benefits are substantial. Railway officials have stated that the primary goal of the remodelling is to significantly increase the operational capacity of both the Bina and Agasod yards. Once completed, the upgraded infrastructure will allow for smoother and more efficient handling of train movements and stoppages. This will help accommodate rising rail traffic, reduce congestion, and ultimately improve the reliability and punctuality of trains passing through this critical junction. Similar yard remodelling projects elsewhere in India have successfully increased train speeds and reduced travel times, showcasing the proven benefits of such upgrades.
Which Trains Are Taking a Different Route?
To facilitate the construction, West Central Railway has announced that 17 long-distance services will be diverted on specific dates in October. These changes affect several popular trains. For instance, the Rewanchal Express services (12185/12186) between Rewa and Rani Kamalapati will be diverted via Katni, Jabalpur, and Itarsi from October 8 to 14. Similarly, the Rewa-Dr Ambedkar Nagar Tri-Weekly Express (11703/11704) will run via Bina Malkhedi, Guna, and Maksi on select dates. Other affected services include the Jabalpur-Veraval expresses (11465/11466), the Bhopal-Jodhpur expresses (14814/14813), and the Bhopal-Singrauli Tri-Weekly Express (22165/22166), all of which will bypass their usual routes through Bina on specified days. These diversions are in addition to a broader list of over 20 train cancellations and other service changes announced earlier for the September-October period.
Understanding the Impact on Passengers
The diversions mean that these trains will not stop at certain stations along their regular routes and will instead travel through alternative corridors like Jabalpur, Itarsi, Kota, and Guna. Beyond the 17 diverted express trains, the project also impacts numerous local MEMU services and other passenger trains, with many being cancelled, short-terminated, or short-originated from nearby stations like Khurai and Bina Malkhedi Junction. For instance, the Bilaspur-Bhopal Express (18236) will be short-terminated at Bina Malkhedi Junction for a period in October. This ripple effect underscores the complexity of the yard work. Railway authorities have strongly advised all passengers planning to travel through the region during this period to check the latest status of their train before beginning their journey to avoid any last-minute issues.
