What is the EOS-05 Mission?
On September 4, 2026, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the Earth Observation Satellite-05 (EOS-05) aboard its GSLV-F17 rocket. Also known as GISAT-1A, this 2,367 kg satellite is not just another addition to India's constellation;
it's the country's first imaging satellite placed in a geosynchronous orbit, approximately 36,000 km above the Earth. Unlike satellites in low-Earth orbit that pass over a location periodically, EOS-05's position allows it to continuously monitor the Indian subcontinent. After a series of complex orbit-raising manoeuvres, the satellite settled into its final orbital slot, ready to begin its mission. This successful launch was a significant moment for ISRO, marking a comeback after a few challenging missions.
A New 'Eye in the Sky' for Weather
The primary advantage of EOS-05 is its ability to provide near-real-time imagery. It is equipped with multi-spectral and hyper-spectral imagers that can capture images of a selected area every five minutes and the entire country every 30 minutes. This is a game-changer for weather forecasting. While India already operates meteorological satellites like the INSAT-3D series, EOS-05 is specifically designed for high-resolution imaging of land and ocean surfaces. Its sensors can distinguish different types of ground cover, like vegetation and water bodies, by analysing how they reflect light. With a spatial resolution of 42 metres, it offers a new level of detail from such a high orbit, enabling precise monitoring of rapidly developing weather events like cyclones, cloudbursts, and floods.
Transforming Indian Agriculture
For India's farmers, EOS-05's data could be revolutionary. The high-resolution, frequent updates will provide critical information for precision agriculture. Farmers and agricultural agencies can use this data for better crop management, from planning sowing dates to optimising irrigation schedules.
