Choosing the Right Train
The Delhi-Gorakhpur route is serviced by numerous trains, each offering a different balance of speed, cost, and comfort. Superfast trains like the Gorakhdham Express, Bihar Sampark Kranti, and Sapt Kranti Express are popular choices, covering the distance
in about 12 to 13 hours. For a more budget-friendly option, Garib Rath Express trains are a great pick, offering AC travel at lower fares. If you're not in a hurry, other mail and express trains like the Avadh Assam Express take longer but can be easier to get tickets for. Most of these trains depart from New Delhi (NDLS), Old Delhi (DLI), or Anand Vihar Terminal (ANVT), so double-check your departure station before booking.
Mastering the Art of Booking
Booking tickets is often the biggest hurdle. The golden rule is to book as far in advance as possible, as reservations open 120 days ahead. The official IRCTC Rail Connect app and website are your primary tools. If you're planning a last-minute trip, the Tatkal quota is your best bet. Tatkal bookings open at 10 AM for AC classes and 11 AM for non-AC classes one day before the train's departure from its originating station. Tickets sell out in seconds, so have your IRCTC account logged in, a passenger list saved, and your payment details ready. Apps like ConfirmTkt can also help predict the confirmation chances of a waitlisted (WL) ticket, giving you a better idea of whether to book or look for alternatives.
Selecting Your Travel Class
Indian Railways offers various classes to suit different budgets. For young travellers, Sleeper Class (SL) is the most economical option for overnight journeys. It’s a non-AC coach with three-tiered berths and a quintessential Indian train experience. However, it can get crowded. For more comfort and security, 3-Tier AC (3A) is a significant step up, offering air-conditioning and bedding (a pillow, sheet, and blanket). 2-Tier AC (2A) provides more space and privacy with only two-tiered berths. The price difference between SL and 3A is considerable, so it often comes down to a choice between budget and comfort. For solo female travellers, AC coaches are generally considered safer for overnight journeys.
Packing for the Journey
A long train journey requires smart packing. A high-capacity power bank is non-negotiable to keep your devices charged, as onboard charging points can be unreliable. Pack a light blanket or shawl, even for AC classes, as the temperature can get quite cold. A neck pillow and an eye mask can make sleeping much more comfortable. Bring your own snacks and a reusable water bottle, though you can also order food via the IRCTC e-catering service for hygienic meals delivered to your seat. For security, a chain and padlock to secure your luggage to the hooks under the lower berth are highly recommended, especially in Sleeper Class.
Safety and Comfort on Board
Once on board, your safety and comfort are paramount. Always keep your valuables like your phone, wallet, and laptop in a small bag that you can keep close to you, even while sleeping. If you're a solo traveller, booking an upper berth offers more privacy and security. Be cautious about accepting food or drinks from strangers. Familiarise yourself with your coach and the location of the emergency exits and alarms. The Indian Railways provides a helpline number, 139, for security, medical, or other assistance. To make the journey more enjoyable, download movies, podcasts, or playlists beforehand, as network connectivity can be patchy.
