Immediate Action: On-the-Spot Reporting
If you receive food that is of poor quality, unhygienic, or if you are overcharged, the first step is to raise the issue immediately. You can speak directly to the pantry car manager or the catering staff on board. If you ordered through e-Catering, contact
the vendor first if the train is still near the delivery station. Often, immediate communication can resolve the problem quickly. You can also report the incident to the Train Ticket Examiner (TTE) or any on-board IRCTC supervisors, who are authorised to intervene. When making a complaint, be ready to provide your PNR number, coach number, and seat number for prompt action.
Rail Madad: The All-in-One Digital Portal
For a more formal and trackable complaint, the 'Rail Madad' platform is the most efficient tool. Available as both a mobile app and a website (railmadad.indianrailways.gov.in), it is the primary grievance redressal system for Indian Railways. To file a complaint, you need to enter your PNR number, which auto-fills your journey details. You can then select the specific issue from a detailed list, including catering services, write a description of the problem, and even upload photos as evidence. Once submitted, you receive a complaint reference number to track the status of your grievance. This digital trail ensures your complaint is officially logged and directed to the correct department for action.
Helpline Numbers for Direct Communication
If you prefer to speak to someone directly, Indian Railways operates several helpline numbers. The integrated helpline number 139 is a one-stop solution for various issues, including food-related complaints. By following the interactive voice response (IVR) system, you can connect to the appropriate channel for catering grievances. For issues specifically with food quality and other catering services, there is also a toll-free number: 1800-111-321. When you call, have your PNR and train details ready to share with the customer service executive.
Using Social Media and SMS for Quick Escalation
In today's digital age, social media has become a powerful tool for quick grievance redressal. Passengers can post their complaints on X (formerly Twitter) by tagging the official handles of the Ministry of Railways (@RailMinIndia) and IRCTC (@IRCTCofficial). Including your PNR number and photos of the issue can increase the chances of a swift response. Another accessible option is to send an SMS. A complaint can be registered by messaging 9717680982 with your train and complaint details.
How Indian Railways Enforces Quality
Indian Railways and IRCTC take these complaints seriously as part of a broader effort to maintain and improve food standards. Based on passenger grievances over the last three years, IRCTC has imposed fines amounting to ₹5.13 crore on vendors, issued 54 show-cause notices, and terminated six contracts for quality and hygiene violations. Regular and surprise inspections are conducted by officials to check for FSSAI compliance, hygiene, and service quality. Recent measures to improve transparency include placing QR codes on meal packets, which provide details about the kitchen, and installing CCTV cameras in base kitchens for real-time monitoring.
