Meet EOS-05: India's Watchful Eye
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to launch its state-of-the-art Earth observation satellite, EOS-05. Also known as GISAT-1A, this spacecraft is India's first imaging satellite designed to operate from a geosynchronous orbit. This mission
is particularly significant as it follows a previous attempt in August 2021 with a similar satellite, EOS-03 (or GISAT-1), which was lost due to a technical issue during launch. The successful deployment of EOS-05 will mark a major milestone, placing India in an elite group of nations with geostationary imaging capabilities and fulfilling a long-held strategic goal.
The Magic of a 36,000 Kilometre Orbit
The standout feature of EOS-05 is its destination: a geostationary orbit approximately 36,000 kilometres above the Earth's equator. Unlike most Earth observation satellites, which circle the planet in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) at altitudes of a few hundred kilometres, a geostationary satellite matches the Earth's rotation speed. This allows it to seemingly 'hover' over a fixed geographical area. While LEO satellites like the Cartosat series provide high-resolution images, they can only capture snapshots of a location when they pass over it, with revisits sometimes taking days. EOS-05’s constant presence over the Indian subcontinent eliminates this time gap, enabling continuous, real-time monitoring of a single large region.
How It Actually 'Monitors' the Borders
EOS-05 is equipped with powerful imaging instruments, including multispectral and hyperspectral sensors. These cameras can capture images across different wavelengths of light, including visible, near-infrared, and thermal infrared. This allows the satellite to see more than just a simple picture; it can gather data on ground cover, heat signatures, and environmental changes. For border surveillance, this means it can track troop movements, monitor the construction of new infrastructure near the frontier, and detect unusual activity day and night. With a spatial resolution of 42 metres, it can provide detailed imagery over a wide area, a remarkable feat from such a high altitude. Its rapid revisit capability will allow it to focus on priority areas, providing fresh images every five to ten minutes if needed.
A Dual-Purpose Powerhouse
While its strategic importance for national security is paramount, EOS-05 is designed for both military and civilian applications. Beyond border surveillance, its ability to provide near-real-time, continuous observation makes it an invaluable tool for disaster management. It can track the formation and movement of cyclones, monitor large-scale floods, and detect forest fires as they develop, enabling quicker response from authorities on the ground. The data will also support applications in agriculture, forestry, and environmental science, providing insights into everything from crop health to the impact of climate change.
A Strategic Leap for India
The launch of EOS-05 represents a significant enhancement of India's strategic capabilities. A persistent eye over the Indian subcontinent and surrounding oceans provides a powerful deterrent and an invaluable intelligence-gathering tool. It reduces reliance on periodic satellite passes and allows for the constant monitoring of areas of interest without interruption.
